How Does Stable Heating Work?

10/20/2015 6:21 AM

I came across a question the other day regarding on how a sustainable heat source works.

By that I mean something that can heat up to a maximum of 200 degrees/392 Fahrenheit and is controllable with a regulator. How does it stay on the desired temperature? What components make it work? I am very curious, because I don´t want to open anything in order to look at it because I wouldn´t get it anyways, so I thought someone here could maybe explain my questions and how those things work.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! That helps a lot in order to understand the mechanics behind it! Is there anything comparable taht is small that can heat up to these temperatures?

I have a number of temperature controlled soldering stations that will maintain tip temperature within around 3 degrees celcius all day long with temperatures up to 450 degrees C. The sensor in the tip is no bigger than a pin head, and the temperature control module is about the size of a matchbox. Is that small enough?

If you google Watlow they have a lot of information on their site that will help you understand heating applications. Also lots of devices that may do in your application.

Also google the individual devices. As the are some companies that just make those devices. Cal come sto mind for controllers

A temperature sensor, controller, switching device and heat source.

In a electric application the set temperature is placed into the controller. At start up the controller turns on the switching device. Which is usually a solid state device. It applies power to the heating element. As the sensor senses the approach of the temperature to the set temperature it starts to pulse the switching device. At set temperature the controller will pulse the switch to maintain the temperature. This works for any electric heat application.

In gas application the switch is replaced with a valve and servo. Instead of pulsing the servo adjust the valve to maintain the flame level to the set temperature.

It's called feedback. The temperature is measured and compared to the desired temperature (called the setpoint); if the temperature is too low the heating continues until it reaches the setpoint, then it is stopped and doesn't come on again until the temperature falls below the setpoint, then the whole thing starts (cycles) again.

Omega Engineering has a myriad of information on temperature control that is excellent and free. They also offer the information in hand-bound books or on CD/DVD for free.

Most instrument & controls manufacturers offer excellent information including recommendations on type and size of equipment required for the application.

Sounds a little too hot for the horses though.

Heat sink when, you got heat energy on it either big or small and does not falter, we call it heat reservoir. A temperature regulator work in different ways we have 1) bi metals (thermostat) 2) transducers based ( tc, rtd, laser, infrared) Now, i think you need to do further reading. We'll be just here, do some effort learning.

"We" do not call a heat sink a heat reservoir.

A heat sink does not store heat.

Heat reservoir is a general term that could apply to any sources and dissipations of heat either whatever you process may be, so long as it does not degrade dissipate its isotherm, its called a heat reservoir, more like water reservoir concept.

Is it a relevant OT? I suggest you should do google and check the facts.
