Conversion Factors for Emission Gases

10/29/2015 10:18 AM

Hey engineers. I completed Emission Tests for 5 gases on my auto. They are HC, CO2, NoX, Co, and O2. The results are in PPM. I need the conversion factors for each gas to convert to gm/mile. Assume the vehicle gets 35 mpg. I need to see how I rate with the EPA Tier Program. Their results are measured in gm/mile. Thanks.

..."The pollutants are typically measured in grams per mile (gpm) rather than percentage of concentration (%) or parts per million (ppm) which makes it hard to translate ordinary 4 and 5-gas analyzer readings into gpm readings. Software is available that can do a fairly accurate conversion using additional inputs such as vehicle weight and engine displacement. Without the proper software, there's no way to know if a vehicle's HC, CO and NOX readings are within the required gpm limits or not."...

This is what I can't understand about VW's emissions debacle, the amount of pollutants is going to vary according to many factors, load, fuel formula, atmospheric pressure, displacement of engine and weight of vehicle, altitude, relative humidity, temperature....It seems to me an average has to be taken over all these conditions....making the output meet certain criteria under certain conditions would be a one off test which would require ignoring all other factors...wouldn't this capability have to be built into the software? It seems to me there can be no assurance of passing the test without this capability...or that the test is an accurate representation of the true emissions in everyday use....

Me too.

I do believe the grams-per-mile rating is an average that takes into consideration all of the factors you mention.

We know that fuel consumption and pollutant levels for most non-commercial unloaded vehicles are higher at idle than at highway speeds.

It seems to me that with the current technology onboard vehicles, the emission levels could be constantly monitored with any issues immediately reported to the operator as well as to an emissions enforcement facility via satellite rather than have required expensive, time consuming annual testing.

Of course all older vehicles that do not have the technology onboard to do this would have to be manually tested.

It would not stop the need for testing but it would drastically decrease the size of the testing department and the associated cost. (Reduce taxes and the owner's wasted time.)

Do you work for the Government? Looking for actual work, while working for the Government?

I've used this program called "Convert" for years. It offers up conversion factors for just about everything. It come in handy since I design testers for products that come from all over the world. It can be found for free here: https://joshmadison.com/convert-for-windows/

Just read further the features of the analyzer, it surely displays all readings for the gases in ppm.

See ideal gas equation PV = nRT, n - number of moles of gas; R- Ideal Gas constant.

I do not exactly recall so you better do a search
