Maintaining Positive and Negative Pressure In Air-Conditioned Spaces

11/04/2015 6:02 AM

The project calls for Maintaining Positive and Negative Pressure In Air conditioned Spaces. The room differential pressure method will be used in conjunction with Air Handling Unit Fan's VFDs to achieve this differential.

The return air is not ducted. There is a plenum return to the AHU. The absence of return air ducts from the spaces to the AHU is expected to make it very difficult to achieve accurate air balancing of the return air quantities from the rooms.

Any ideas about how to solve this riddle will be appreciated. Thanks

Adjustable through the door(s) and/or window(s) return registers combined with thermostatically controlled "smart" outlet registers in each and every room/area are your only hope of somewhat balancing the air flow.

Depending on the building design you may have to install in-line booster blowers/fans in convoluted areas that restrict air flow.

The whole idea of having positive and negative pressure rooms is for environment control...this requires sealed rooms with variable supply and return air volume control, including variable fresh air feed....

Respected Shockhiscan & SolarEagle

Thanks for your Positive Responses that confirm my concerns about the overwhelming, rather unmanageable nature of the problem whose definite solution is a fully ducted return.

Thanks again and keep on the Positive Track.

Your track record speaks volumes about your ethics, or lack of.

Don't ask strangers to do your job for you.

You are obviously cheating your company and their customers.

Hire a qualified consultant who will stand by their work. Quit standing behind strangers while they do your thinking for you.

What type of application it is. ? Is it hospital or any other building? You can refer ASHRAE and other standards also. Good practice is to consult professionals to get correct solution.

YES, ITS A HOSPITAL. THE ASHRAE AND OTHER RELEVANT STANDARDS APPLY AND THE TASK IS TO PHYSICALLY BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE THE DESIGN CRITERIA OF THOSE STANDARDS WITH REGARDS TO POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE PRESSURE AREAS. THIS IS WHERE THE DIFFICULTY IS.

GOOD IDEA ABOUT CONSULTATION. YES, AS A FIRST STEP I CONSULTED THOSE ON THE FORUM, MANY OF WHOM HAVE MANY YEARS OF GROUNDING IN THE FIELD OF HVAC. ONCE THERE IS THE MEETING OF THE MINDS, THE MATTER WILL WE WRAPPED UP AS YOU HAVE SUGGESTED.

THANKS FOR THE GOOD INPUT.

From reading through this and other threads started by you there would seem to be a meeting of minds with a general consensus "you are a waste of space".
