moving logs (timber)

07/26/2007 2:57 PM

I am posting a question here because the search at Globalspec gave me peanuts.

I need to find a manufacturer of self propelled cranes and another one of timber grapples. The companies shouldn't be already represented in Uruguay.

I have a customer who is starting a new bulk handling port in Uruguay and he needs the equipment to move single logs from trucks to ships. As the regulations don't allow further civil works at the port, he needs a self propelled crane.

Try a "Google" search on timber cranes. I got 1,250,000 hits, and the first two I looked at seemed promising.

No more civil work at the dock? Does that mean no more build or that the government will not pay for maintaince? A self propelled crane os going to need a sold surface that can stand a lot of weight and inspections for the load bearing ability of the surface. The cane could end up in the water without these in place before a crane is ever delivered.

Japan has several good cane manufacturers.

No more building.

The port is crowded. To build more they would need to move all of the Navy ships to a port that is currently abandoned or do some major works on the bay area (i.e. extend the coast) There is no political commitment to do either.

Can you give me the names of those Japanese manufacturers?

I am in the business 27 yrs

a good resource is the Northern Logger magazine

most outfits load containers with two forklifts ,or front end loaders one to hold the log one to push it in.

if you actually need a crane www.machinerytrader.com or www.timberlinemag.com www.amlumber.com most subscriptions are free

if you need a crane I can find anything you want and ship it .

I would recommend containers
