Cadmium is nasty stuff. Nickel is nice and shiny...mmmm shiny.

The difference is that one is plated with Cd and the other with Ni. There is eNi plating, Electoless Ni plating and Sulfamate Ni plating. Which Ni plating are you plant to use? Cd is primarily used for corrosion protection and Ni for corrosion and or wear resistance. For corrosion protection Cd has a tendency to migrate to areas of the plating where there is a breech of the plating [plating removed], Ni does not do this. Cd is soft and Ni is hard [that is why Ni has good wear resistance, but not at good as Cr plating or by thermal spray [HVOF]. There is also brite Cd plating and low embrittlement Cd plating [user for high stength steels to minimize the possiblility of Hyrogen Embrittlement]. In all cases, always bake off the hydrogen from the plating process as soon as you can, I recommend within 4 hours after the completion of the plating, or else you will have the potential of Hydrogen embrittlement or Hydrogen Assist Cracking [HAC] in your part(s).

Very thorough Big Kahuna,

the "raw" parts are dipped in cleaner and then acid before cad plating,

the decorative parts are polished and buffed to a super smooth finish,

the parts to be nickel plated are also dipped in a cleaner and acid,

nickel is yellow compared to shiny silver chrome plating,

nickel is used as the base to put chrome plating on,

Hello guest.

Nickel plating is permitted under End of Life Vehicles(ELV) And Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations in Peoples Republic Of Green (Europe).

Cadmium is not.

All the rest is technical details.

If I could have my choice I'd take Cadmium every time for corrosion protection; In my experience nickel tends to dull and rust through over time.

Hey MILO,

I love the signature line... this relates to EMC susceptibility testing particularly well!

I do not know about technical uses or advantages, but the disadvantage of using cadmium is eventually it could get dispersed back into the environment.

Cadmium promotes kidney failure, and there is no satisfactory treatment to remove cadmium from the human body without it passing throught the kidneys, which kills off the kidney as it passes through.

I hear you.

But ...

Ultimate kidney failure is a moot point if my particular armament system doesn't function because of corrosion issues and I get killed by the bad guys.

Water is toxic too. Its all about dosage.

Control and regulate the living daylights out of the platers with their chemicals, but banning plated screws?

Question, How many little european children have died from ingesting cadmium plated screws?

A) All of them;

B) None of them;

C) Not enough of them:

D) A good start:

E) Its a stupid question.

Answer E) Its a stupid question, and by the way, banning cad plate on screws is a stupid law.

NAnny state. based on ignorance of method of exposure. Clean up the process, not ban the application. NExt thing you know, they'll say something like Guns kill people, so lets ban guns... I'll be for that, as soon as they ban Cars, and cigarettes and ...You get my point.

Like the new lead free solder... doesn't melt...other than that it's great!

There are still houses with lead water pipes....

I knew I should have invested in silver and tin....

Sorry rambling now.

Could it have somethingh to do with corrosive properties?

You got some good feedback. <My 2 cents is.> I use a He cd laser that I made for My laser heterodyne experiments. That stuff gets all over the place, and will migrate from point A to point B iE including your skin; no matter what you do be very careful handling Cadmium. Use Ni its safer; plus you can plate gold over it.

I would like to know more about what you are doing. That would help me see your point better. Mr X
