Flowmeter on Bio Gas Measurement

01/28/2016 12:16 AM

Hi,

i am working on a project inquiry in which i have requirement for best suitable flow meter on Bio gas measurement while the end user was using Vortex Flow meter on this application but isn't happy with this solution. Can anybody suggest the best suitable flow meter for bio gas measurement.

Bio-gas Flow Measurement

Size: DN200 / PN16

Normal Flow rate: 500 m3/h

Pressure drop @: 2,8 mbar

Pressure Normal / Maximum: 15 / 25 mbar

Temp: 40°C

Specific gravity: 1,261 kg/Nm3

Viscosity: 0,008 cP

Thermal mass type (hot wire anenometer). Endress & Hauser supply them, among many others.

Has the advantage of reading mass (or normal) flow directly, and does not need correction for actual pressure and temperature. Gives good turndown.

You don't mean specific gravity, this is a ratio, for gases taken as air = 1. Density is in kg/Nm3, but your 1.261 looks high, biogas would be ~ 55% CH4, 45% CO2 to give that density. More typiclal biogas is 70% CH4, 30% CO2, density ~ 1.1 kg/Nm3, though it does vary.

Density = mass/volume. I may be dense, but in kg/Nm3 what is the N doing?

Nm3 is a normal cubic meter. Like a standard cubic foot, but more... metric.

Thank you - nobody told me they'd been meddling with the SI system of units. I note, though, that the normal cubic meter differs from the standard cubic foot in that it is rather colder.

Density = mass/volume, but specific gravity = density of fluid in question/density of standard fluid, water in case of liquids, air in case of gases.

Normal temperature and pressure (NTP) is 0°C at 1 atm = 760 mmHg = 14.7 psi (absolute).

Standard pressure is still 1 atm, but temperature varies, 10°C (50°F), 60°F (~ 15.5°C), 68°F (= 20°C) or 70°F. Fine as long as you know which one the other guy means, you're careful.

But as pressure is usually (over here) in bar (~ 750 mmHg) or a multiple, I prefer to use that, and molar volume 22.7m3 (at 0°C) vs 22.4m3 at 1 atm.

Thermal mass types will work if the gas is dry, however moisture can be a problem for that principal. I would suggest you look at Ultrasonic type, see http://krohne.com/en/products/flow-measurement/ultrasonic-flowmeters/optisonic-7300-biogas/

Yes you are absolutely correct, the end user is already using E&H thermal mass flowmeter but due to moisture & dust, the end user is asking for alternative solution.

I seem to recall that we used a Rebel Pont wet gas meter, but that was only in lab testing when we were doing anaerobic digestion tests to determine flow rates/total volumes of digesting hog manure. Not sure if they have large enough models for your flow rate. And the lab units are really not designed for anything else as they are not very robust.
