Naturally is better referring to NEMA and IEE but basically are:

-metal enclosed, for which internal parts are not accessible to the operator

-station type, where some requirements concernig short circuit are of utmost importance

-metalclad, for which all internal parts may be accesed without warm to the operator

I strongly advice you to referr to the above mentioned standards.

Regards

I used to think Metal Clad was breakers and Metal Enclosed was switches. I have noticed that Eaton has some Front accessible gear they call Metal Enclosed with Vacuum breakers. I have been meaning to investigate this .

1) Metal Enclosed Switchgear ANSI C37,20.3

MFG's include Square D, GE S & C, Eaton

2) Metal-Clad Switchgear C37.20.2

This is breakers, Various types interrupting SF6, Vacuum. I don't think anybody makes air breakers anymore

MFGS Square D, GE, Eaton

3) Padmount gear. I think the Mfgs follow a Metal Enclosed standard

Mfgs, ABB, Cooper Power, S & C

4) Gas insulated Switchgear- - GIS

MFgs ABB, Mitsubishi Usually 34kV and above

Check out the IEEE website and you might be able to determine the appropriate standard for each. You will probably have more success going the Mfgs websites and reviewing what standards the gear is built to.

Be careful when dealing with Eaton/Culter Hammer because they have front accessible only but it even a smaller dimension then provided by other vendors (Square D, etc.)
