Speaking of Theodolites

03/06/2016 6:40 PM

THIS is a theodolite. It was used in WWII and "liberated" by my uncle, Raid, who was in the Navy and escaped from Corregidor.

There are horizontal and vertical graduations on the prism inside the eyepiece. The wooden case is very well made and has a leather belt loop on the back side, suggesting that it was worn by a field artillery officer. I have found these markings: Huet Paris and S.G.No 7'80.

I have never found any information on this instrument.

That device actually appears to be an Alidade rather than a true Theodolite.

Maybe that's why I couldn't find out much about it.

Check this site for a similar device.

Here's a clickable link to the above if you trust me.

This one may be a bit later

Yes, that's it exactly!

Well, except that the round bubble level is in a different place and my box does not have the three thumb screws and instead has the belt loop on the back side,

Thanks!

I think it might be time to explain the difference between a "builder's level", "transit", and "theodolite".
