Electric/Diesel Fire Pump-NFPA

04/01/2016 2:30 AM

Hi,

I just need to ask please if it is allowed in NFPA to connect an electric fire pump to a normal (utility) power source only (without the need to an alternate power source as generator) in case a diesel fire pump is used in conjunction with the electric fire pump.

Awaiting your reply.

Thank you a lot.

So you have a dedicated full capacity diesel driven fire pump, and you want to know if you can install a second full capacity electric fire pump strictly as a backup system should the diesel pump fail.

There's no reason why you can't have redundant systems, as long as they both meet the applicable codes in the jurisdiction where they are installed. However the final decision(s) will rest with the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) and/or the Insurance Underwriter, whichever has the more stringent requirement(s). Be sure to get the owner's approval in writing as well.

Most fire marshals would be delighted to have 2 fire pumps available for independent use.

I would think that clause 9.3 covers your query adequately.

Specifically sub clause 9.3.3 which states that "An alternate source of power for the primary fire pump shall not be required where a back-up engine driven fire pump, steam turbine driven fire pump or back-up electric driven fire pump with independent power source meeting 9.2.2 is installed in accordance with this standard".

Just make sure that your diesel pump meets all of the requirements of the regulations.

A decent chat with the local fire marshal should soon sort you out.
