It looks like a tear in the aluminum foil applied to the expanded steel grating of a charcoal grill.

Something to do with a battery? Possibly a lithium/polymer cell. Maybe that's an air intake at bottom for an air cathode.

Is is it one of those perpetual light machines where you stick a lightbulb in a box made of solar panels and mirrors that will powers itself forever? Body heat powered communicator?

Well, not in the sense you may be thinking.

When in use, the pictured side is hidden from view.

This device was part of a sales promotion.

If the lucky numbers matched, you would win a new car, or one of the lesser prizes including a two day one night stay at some "resort". The stay no doubt included some type of high pressure sales pitch.

The display was powered by the two button cells. The cover had a jumper bar to complete the circuit, after the lucky winner pulled a plastic strip out of the slot to complete the circuit.

So it was a connector from one thing to another with a resistor and/or diode....

I'm afraid that front doesn't look like the front of that back, if you see what I mean. I demand a re-match.

The digital display, is piece of paper with the numbers on it illuminated by an LED, which by the way was guessed earlier without confirmation...which I might add is by definition a light emitting diode...

Hey at least you got a neat little LED and some batteries. All I ever received was a scratch off ticket and an aluminum key.
