Race to Mars

05/23/2016 8:14 AM

Watching this video would be pretty demoralizing if it weren't for the fact that I don't think it will be NASA colonizing Mars anyway.

Not exactly impressive considering what other groups have accomplished in robotics. I mean, a 300+lb robot that falls over while walking slowly over flat ground doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Meanwhile SpaceX is getting ready to launch the Falcon Heavy

Don't get me wrong, I think what NASA has done is great. Without the information they've gathered about space and Mars, no private entity would have a chance. But if history is any guide (1500's and 1600's), it will be private enterprises that successfully establish colonies, not the government, in my opinion.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge something still in development stage....I think the robot is quite impressive....

I prefer Boston Dynamics where they hit their robots with hockey sticks...

Why would we need to start colonizing Mars with Humanoid robots anyway? The Rover-style could to all the base construction jobs with just a common industrial robot arm mounted on top.

Humanoid robots are fascinating, but as we've seen, it takes a LOT of processing power just to keep one's balance. Why not make bottom-heavy, fat-wheeled/tracked bots and save the computing power for more important tasks, like Completing The Mission? We can send/build the humanoid robots later, if we need them.
