DC voltage Circuit Breaker

08/03/2007 5:11 PM

Hello to all, might I ask if anyone can lead me to a manufacturer of DC Circuit breakers single pole 30 -35 amps 600VDC

Dual Pole 30-35 amps 600Volts

Both are used in the Marine industry aboard small shuttle subs to carry 4-12 divers...each Sub has 6-8 propellers....water resistance is a real plus but does not have to be water proof..

Hi,

have a look in:

http://www.airpax.net/site/protection/cb/index.html

Airpax is one of the leaders in these products.

You might also have a look at BEP Marine products.

In such a critical environment, stay away from thermal oriented breakers. Stay with Hall effect or Magnetic based designs. Also be aware that some units allow forced operation by holding the switch closed, others do not. Something to think about in a tight spot.

Thank you for the comment, forced operation maybe a plus in this case as the lives of the divers or a rescue mission could make the difference...

Pete, you should be aware that BEP, Blue Sea and nearly all panel providers use breakers from other manufacturers despite the fact some of them have their own name on the breaker. Globally you will find Carlingswitch to be the largest provider, with Airpax and ETA sharing a close second.

Given your application, I would be inclined to check out Heinemann breakers as well. Heinemann has a long history of aircraft/military applications. I am a marine electrical designer. I use these products every day. However be aware that your requirement for 600V DC is far greater than the typical 300V AC or DC rating. The majority of these magnetic breakers will have problems with arc quench at full load current on a repeat basis. If your 600V spec derives from actual circuit voltage in the propulsion or maneouvering systems, this could be critical.

Both BEP and Blue Sea have great catalogs, but one detail that often escapes notice is the fault current rating. The typical DC application breakers only have a 3000A fault current rating, but you should consider using the 10000 A rating breakers for increased reliability. You can easily determine which is which, since the 10,000A rated breaker has a square shoulder cut out and the 3,000A breaker has a round hole cutout for the actuator toggle.

Eaton manufacture DC Breakers but it is 48 VDC with various Ampere.

We have manufacture a DC UPS for a Japanese Company to pair with their inverters by using 3 Pole MCB 60A with 25Ka breaking capacity for the load of 30 Amps.

The breaker you are looking for would be a GE frame type "TED" 30-35 amp 2 pole. It has a DC voltage of 500v/DC. I know a water proof enclosure can be obtain. But whether the enclosure was pressure rated and to what depth, I wouldn't know.

Pete:

I was doing some web surfing today and came across your post. We have just completed working with a leading switchgar manufacturer on a UL listed molded case breaker for 600 VDC max applications. If you have not found a solution yet, please feel free to drop me a note at fcatapano@validusdc.com

Cheers,
