What Is It? Iron Lump Jun16

06/12/2016 3:54 AM

This lump of iron was found in the remote bush area of the Pilbara Western Australia. It is a very iron ore rich area so this lump may natural or it may be alien i.e. a meteorite. Any thoughts?

Maybe a meteorite that has been weathered.

It looks like a well weathered brake rotor for a train or large lorry.

It is too regular for a fulgurire

As far as i could determine, not man made. The 'teeth' and nodules appear to metal with some of the layers being rock. Also there are curves that would not work in with a rotor. Jim

You found a lump of iron in a mining region for iron ore. Did you find it near a train line?

Not my find i'm afraid. Thanks for the link. I worked on a iron ore mine (Koolan Island) back in the 70's but never saw anything like this. This one has nodules that appear to be the extension of the 'teeth' but on the other side of a layer about a cm thick. There are two rows of 'teeth' with a layer of ??? in between. The 'teeth' and the nodules appear to be almost entirely metal. The guy found this about 30 yrs ago and it has been kicking around the back of his ute and then the garden since. He hosed dirt out from between the 'teeth' to get what you see now. A possible clue is that this segment has compound curves that would make it part of a sphere, or bubble, with the 'teeth' being radiated from the centre and the nodules on the outside. Jim

Looks like you could be right. Different part of the world could explain the differences. Unfortunately i didn't find this sample and so i have no idea of the terrain nearby. The general area is very old;= from Wiki

The Pilbara Craton along with the Kaapvaal Craton are the only remaining areas of the Earth with pristine 3.6–2.5 Ga crust.[1] The extremely old and rare nature of this crustal region makes it a valuable resource in the understanding of the evolution of the Archean Earth.[2

so i guess all sorts of leaching and re-aggregation has occurred in that time.

Maybe an artistic lighting strike.

I'm thinking something to do with a lightning strike on a layer of iron ore.

Or some kind of unusual fossil that was preserved with some kind of iron chemistry.

What if it was a fossil with iron based chemistry that was hit by lighting. Would that be iron-ic? ;)

It would be the start of a joke-cracking, metallic, saurian, superhero comic book: Ironysaur.
