Haas Axx Servo Amps & 40/30 HP Vector Drive. Anything I Can Do With Them?

02/15/2017 6:27 PM

I just acquired the various Haas servo motor drive electronics from a suposedly working CNC machining center (mechanically worn out) but I can't find any information on them regarding their related control inputs. One A30 and two A45 servo amplifiers and one big 40/30 HP vector drive unit.

What I would like to do repurpose them for basic higher powered servo and VFD type work, if possible, but I can't find any online documentation that says anything useful about what sort of input signals they use.

The bigger 40/30 Vector drive is standard 200 - 240 VAC 3 ph input with a 325 VDC output supply that went to the servo amplifiers.

Anyone familiar with them and what it takes for control inputs to get them to work?

Thanks! More reading to do.

So far what I am finding is they have 8 pin control inputs which are most likely serial data ports but so far not confirmed.

A30 and A40 series Servo Amplifiers plus the bigger 40/30 unit are what I have. I can power them up and attach motors easily enough but I am presently stumped on how to make them do anything.

On top of that I also picked up a pair of huge Fanuc A06B-6064 servo amplifiers as well which so far seem to a bit better documented than the Haas units. Not great so far but at least manuals that cover their basic setup are available online.

I have more use for them if they can be converted to work as stand alone VFD units than I do as special application servo motor drivers.

Kinda thinking all this stuff is going to get scrapped for basic electronics parts if I can't get them to work without too much trouble.

Well they are not serial data operated but a fairly simple pulse step Mocon (Motor Control) setup.

Page 40 and page 76 diagrams is all the relevant info I have been able to track down regarding what does what.

Haas Service Manual

Best guess is logic level pulses to inputs (A) and (B) while the (Enable) is held high determine which direction the motor steps.

Odd parts of a puzzle.....If you had enough parts you could make a 5-axis cnc machine to copy sculptures...

Odd older proprietary design tech and not so easily made to work as plug and play for what I would use them for so I guess they will go up sale or get scraped out.

Crazy what some people think this older hard to work with crap is worth though. Maybe I can get a couple thousand for the lot of goodies and buy some modern stuff that's cheap and plug and play user friendly to work with.

I also have two Fanuc A06B-6064 drive units, two Dynamic Displays QES1514 flat screen panel mount monitors, four Fanuc 4.2 KVA VFD drives and some other electronics that came out of the CNC machining centers as well.

As interesting as it is, unfortunately, for what I would ever need to do all of it can be replaced with a $50 laptop and plug and play servo drive tech for a fraction of what it was worth back in it's day or apparently even now.

Yeah probably only good for people that want a spare as a backup for something they already have...Then again you might come across an old cnc machine that needs those parts replaced haha...
