Three-Year European Degree = Four-Year US one !

08/27/2007 10:19 AM

" New European Degrees ( Bologna Declaration )

Following the presentation of our president at the NFSA conference in Birmingan (AL), after meetings with admissions officers and collegues,

AUAP may now consider the new 3-year program as equivalent to the

US Bachelor Degree "

On the ground of this "agreement " may a holder of an European 3-year

degree be accepted as a US PE ( Professional Engineer ) ?

US Bachelor Degree recipients are not automatically PE's. The PE licensing requirements vary from state to state, but, in general, experience beyond college and successfully passing a certification test is required for the PE designation.

Oh this is a very tricky issue here in Spain. Before Bologne we had

Engineering -> 5 or 6 Years + End of studies project

Technical Engineering -> 3 or 4 Years + End of studies project.

Something like Medicine and Nursing, for many practical things a Nurse can help you better than a medic, but would you let a proficient Nurse operate on your heart?

The difference is before we go to the university/high school.

How many years are there between the age of 6 when you start learing to write and the moment that you end up graduated as a Bachelor?

Typically you can achieve a BS when you reach 21 and a master between 22 and 25.

Addendum : I meant the 3-year European degree in lieu of the US four-year one !

In other words : an individual with a 3D ( read ' 3-year qualification-Degree ) may be admitted for sitting the PE Professional Examinations , the same ?

It is my understanding that in most countries, once you graduate from Engineering School you are able to practice Engineering. That is not the case in the US.

Most of the US PE Board require that before you can take the PE exam you must graduate from an approved program. Usually that is a University that has an approved BS cirriculum, some colleges require a MS . There is a move in the US to require that to be all engineers graduate with a Masters Degree. And that is just to take the test. Passing the PE test is another thing.

Most states allow you to sit for the PE exam based on experience. They just happen to give equivalent work experience for your education. Here in California only a Bachelor of Science in a fully ABET Certified (or Canadian Board Certified) engineering program qualifies for the full 4 years of equivalent work experience. You need at least 6 years of experience, if you have passed the EIT. Non ABET programs receive like half credit or no credit depending on the review. so i would expect that if the State of California (and New York can be similarly as strict on licensure) accepts the full credit for a 3 year program they will assign the applicants 3 years of qualifying experience towards sitting for the exam.

Kind Guest,

This does mean, perhaps, in real terms, that a 3- year European Engineering

Graduate with some years of practical engineering experience behind his/her

shoulders may sit the PE examinations ?
