Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell Infusion (CAR T)

09/04/2017 12:01 AM

..."In CAR T-cell therapy, a type of white blood cell called “T-cells” are extracted from the patient’s blood and modified in the lab to recognize specific cancer cells. These supercharged T-cells are then infused back into the patient, where they search out and destroy cancer cells."...

..."Scott McIntyre calls himself a “walking miracle,” and he wants to tell the world about it.

“I was given three to six months to survive and I’m 16 months in remission,” said the 53-year-old South Bend man. “I would love to get the story out and let people have hope. Don’t give up. You never know.”"...

Wow, something that actually works....

Yes it has been proven to work- but as of yet, it is not a magic bullet.

My mother in law had a form of this treatment a few years ago, but unfortunately she was not one of the successes. It is very dependent on the treatment of the extracted cells- getting them just right.

..."The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has put a hold on Cellectis' CAR-T therapy trials following the death of a 78-year old patient. The decision comes a week after the FDA gave pharmaceutical company Novartis approval to use the treatment."...

..."CAR-T tackles cancer by using a person’s own immune cells. The cells are extracted, modified to carry a new gene, then reintroduced to the body. Current trials were meant to test the effectiveness of CAR-T treatment that used immune cells from a donor, instead of those from the patient. As reported by MIT Technology Review, this modified treatment was referred to as “Off-the-Shelf” or “Universal” CAR-T."...
