LA is to stop lightning strikes from entering the switchyard through the overheadlines (OHLs). That's why, as a standard, LAs are provided at the OHL gantry at the entrance to the switchyard.

The switchyard itself is protected by dedicated lightning protection system.

Having said that, there are some 132kV switchyards in India, where the LAs are not provided in each of the OHLs but provided only at the bus level, common to all the OHLs connected to that particular bus. This is as a low cost option and probably suited to small size switchyards only.
