Forming of round emboss

09/03/2007 12:03 AM

Is the above forming of a round emboss feasible to manufacture?

The material formed is commonly used galvanised steel.

Is there any design rule or general guideline when creating such forming?

embosses in sheet metal should be a maximum of 3x material thickness with a maximum side wall angle of 45 degrees.

I agree with the jacket; you have too steep an angle on the sidewall. Unless your sheet metal is extremely well annealed, and is of a material that does NOT work-harden significantly during drawing, it will shear/tear before you get anywhere near the desired depth. You need to increase the large diameter to at least 30, preferably 40mm.

Even if you try to do it using deep drawing techniques the galvanising will be cracked and need re-dipping. This will probably cause some warping of the sheet metal unless the overall dimensions are not much bigger than the embossing you are proposing.
