super capacitor

09/06/2007 6:23 AM

A super capacitor is used as a memory backup in SLC 100/500 Allenbradley PLC's.We have a no. of this PLC's in our plant installed since 1996.Now some of this PLC's shows cpu fault and the cause is attributed to leaky super capacitor. We are finding great difficulty to get this spare. Can anyboby give us the source. The specification for the super capacitor is 5.9V,0.1 Farad.

I did a search on Globalspec, and digikey has a bunch that are close to that spec. Digikey's own search has two voltages near what you want, one is 5.5v and the other is 6.3 volts. They have many .1F caps at 5.5V, but only one at 6.3V. I would think that going to a slightly higher voltage cap would be ok but you would have to make sure of that.

Hope that helps, if none of these work search a little more on Globalspec there are other companies that make caps in that range.

Thank u very much. The 6.3vdc capacitor though slightly higher in voltage rating will definetely suffice.Thank u again.

I'll cast my vote for the 6.3 volt cap.

A .1 farad capacitor? Series hybrids here we come.

Good luck. Please let me know the supplier when you find one.

I don't suppose you could give me the dimensions of that capacitor could ya? Could you guesstimate its mass?

Allen Bradley, no vendor support? This should be OEM

Let me guess, they want you to buy a new CPU & the soft ware won't be compatible, cause you haven't been paying them their yearly fee [extortion] for updates.

Are you sure it's not, the Battery?

another option is don't turn the power off.

Dear Sunjoy

I have serious doubts on the capacitor value, 0.1 F capacitor at 5.9 V will hold 1.7405 Joules of energy, when fully charged, which is ENORMOUS. What type of bleeder resistor you have to ensure that this energy is discharged when power fails. Alternatively how much current this capacitor has to deliver for how much duration before the capacitor voltage goes down. In your application this capacitor is acting as a battery, but capacitance value appears to be high. Please clarify.

Thanks

you can refer the link given in post #1 by FRANK for the specs. The capacitor serves as a memory backup during power outage and can retain its charge for 30 days at 25 deg cent. The retaining period is a function of temperature and the retaining period decreases as the temperature increases. The super capacitor is also supplemented by a battery to back up the memory for a longer period of time.

Google "SUPERCAPACITOR," there's a whole page of choices.
