Second Floor Concrete Limitations

02/06/2018 11:36 PM

Hello, I wish to determine the weight limit of 900 cases of wine in 2nd floor commercial building built in the 60's. Wine is located along the beams and extend about 3 feet out from each of 5 pillars. Concrete is about 5" thick with a wooden floor over the slab which the wine sits on. This building is located in Japan so I don't know the code specs or if it is reinforced rebar, (sp). Current total weight is about 30,000lbs over 625 sqft. and focused on two areas of 60sqft at 13,600lbs and 65sqft at 16,000lbs. I calculate aprox. 250lbs/sqft of dead weight. The dashed lines are 8" thick concrete support beams under the floor. Are these weights within concrete parameters? If so , how much can i increase in weight. Thanks for your help on this.

Can't help you. I only drink beer on the ground floor.

I think you'll be fine. 250#/144 sq. in. ain't much.

That'll be two bottles each, for me and my men.

Hi Lyn,

Thanks for your reply. Sooooo based on your Toolbox link, i'm looking at 115Kg/.929m2? and the max. spec on the link is 500KG/1m2? So i'm about 1/5th of tolerance?

Better using my tastebuds than my math skills.

Yes we import some craft beer too.

Michael

Since you are in a geologically active area, I would have the premises inspected by a structural engineer....and I would also carry good insurance that covered any possible scenario...The condition of the structure and substrate must be inspected in person by a qualified engineer...

Are you the building owner or are you renting?

Somewhere in the original plans for the building will be a load rating for the space. Your local building codes department will likely have the number in it's records with the plan filing for the original construction permit.

Most municipalities require that the load limit be posted somewhere in the space if it is commercial retail or warehouse along with the occupancy limit.
