09/10/2007 10:33 AM

I am looking for some industry expertise in double direction angular contact thrust bearings such as size ranges, key applications and dominant suppliers.

Thanks,

I briefly perused the SKF, FAG and FAFNIR angular contact bearing information. One way to handle thrust in both directions is to put two angular contact bearings back to back. I know that is probably not what you are looking for but these less specialized items may be the most cost effective solution. FAG has a thing called a four point bearing you might look at. Also SKF has something called a Crossed taper roller bearing that may accept thrust in both directions. I would probably contact several manufacturers or knowledgeable distributors to see what they offer within your dimensional envelope and thrust load requirements. Different manufacturers go about this in different ways when you get outside of the more standardized items.

What's the application?

Angular contact back to back makes me think ball screw. Are you asking for individual bearings, pillow block, flange mount?

Do you need angular contact or will tapered work? precision?

Timken sells back to back angular contacts in a pillow block intended for ball screws, but they're custom order only and sell for big bucks. $800 - $1500 u.s.

What quantities are you looking for?

I am not purchasing the bearings, I am doing a study on them. I would like to know where they are used i.e. for what types of applications and what their size range is. These are individual bearings with 2 rolls of balls that are at angles to each other.

Timken, Torrington, Fafnir, Killian are all under one company umbrella and dominant in northen illinois.

We use the single row angular contact in sets of 2 instead of the double row angular contact. A couple of uses are mounting of the drive end of a ball screw and bearings for high speed spindles vertical or horizontal.

I would bet manufactures of CNC machining centers are probably good customers.
