Mineral Seal Oil

09/11/2007 6:50 AM

I would like to know the health hazards of prolonged exposure to the fumes of mineral seal oil in an enclosed enviroment. I would also like to know the OSHA standards for ventilation when using mineral seal oil in a test stand to test diesel fuel pumps. At present, the test stand is in a vat and the tester has to lean over the vat to check for leaks, causing them to breath the fumes. Curently there is no exhaust fan and the tester is complaining of headaches and feeling sick to the stomach. Thank you for the assistance.

3M makes several breathing apparatus that are all filtered to different OSHA requirements.

The manufacturer of the oil will be able to supply you with the MSDS so you can check the R (risk) and S (safety) alerts. You then carry out a Risk Assessment together with the COSHH assessment based on the hazards.

PPE will always be last control after assessment.

You may want to look at an air purifier that will take those fumes and nutralize them or ionizes them so they fall out. Its not a 100% fix but it should be a tylenol for the headache.

How about a Postive Air Pressure for the enclosure. Non Electrial, off course, don't want to blow it up.

Rmember the fumes are not just absorbed thru the lungs. The fumes can be absorbed thru the skin too.

I would use a chemical suit also.
