Dissecting a Mercedes Benz S-Class Seat

03/28/2018 7:55 AM

Saw this clip on autoblog this morning and thought it was super interesting.

AutoBlog S Class Seats

Who doesn't want a 'hot stone massage' while driving around. I can only imagine how many computer systems the car has.

More things your seat can do for you? = additiomal dependable revenue once car is puy of warrantee for dealer service departments and those manufacturing replacement parts.

A few years back we test drove a Mercedes 500 sl. Every time you cornered to the left, right side lumbar support would push in as if to help keep ypu upright.

It was a pretty weird sensation. Even more weird though was the car reaction to going over a speed bump. Over each speed bump the side lumbar support would each nervously jerk attempting tp provide stability. The overall effect was hilarious as if someone were jumping in and grabbing you in a panick 'are you ok!?'.

I'm sure that system demands some high dollar service/replacemen just after the warrantee is up.

Just more sh1t it go wrong and flatten the battery when it's parked up while you are on vacation.
From what I've seen of 'em, I wouldn't have a Merc' if you paid me... Bloke I worked with had one... it was a money pit.

Here in the colonies a Mercedes is known as a, " Benz " . A " Merc " is a Mercury, as in Lincoln Mercury.

Stuff like that is for people with more dollars than sense.

There is a difference between comfort and pampering.

Culturally, there seems to be this undercurrent that we must 'pamper' ourselves with excessive expenditure of funds for stuff that is largely unnecessary. But, lots of folks buy into it. Who am I to say what someone else should do with their money?

I went to an outdoor exposition last weekend in "Snottsdale" AZ. The parking lot was full of macho pickups, M. B., Hummers, etc. My buddy has a Kia Soul.

The decadence was overpowering inside too. Lots of fat guys dressed in camo. There was a pontoon boat there with TWO 300 HP outboards. I didn't bother to look at the price. Ski boats with so many options it was disgusting. We saw a new Ford pickup, with all the options, selling for $70,000.00 USD. I didn't check for heated seats. Hot stone massages aren't needed where I live.

I can't understand where all that disposable income comes from, but the dealers love it, I'm sure.

You don't understand where the extra income is from? Come on give 'em a little (lot) credit.

Each one of those seats probably cost as much as a Kia.

You're right. Most of them are probably up to their necks in credit debt.

There really isn't a lot of disposable income out there. I read a report recently that said 90% of Americans are maxed out or nearly maxed out on their credit cards.

Very few people actually pay the total bill with cash on hand as soon as it is received.

As for the macho cars ( Napoleon complex ) . Then the guys in camo, weekend end warriors, when and if they need it, their bug out bag will be in the other car than the one they are currently driving.

They got nothing on you Lyn.

90 % sounds like a very high percentage for people with max'ed out credit cards. It seems hard to believe that so many people pee away their money every month.

My wife and I financed a portion of our wedding in 1988 with a couple of credit cards. We felt that pain early on, buckled down, and by mid-1989 we joined the No Balance Club and have been members ever since.

The only purchases on time have been houses and vehicles. And even then, the last two vehicles we've purchased have been cash. (I'll count the RV as a house . . .)

It would be interesting to know by those CR4 members who care to share, whether they routinely carry credit card balances or not?

That was a WAG.

"Over 38% of Americans have credit card debt, with an average of $5,331 per person.

As of the end of 2016, total revolving debt in the U.S. topped $992.4 billion, according to the Federal Reserve. That's a jump of roughly $151 billion since 2011".

We both use one specific card for purchases and pay it off every month. We bank electronically and it's easier to follow a single card.

From what I've been told, I've got very good credit. So every company that sends me an app for a credit card, I always ask for the card with 0% interest forever. The credit card companies think I'm a kook for asking. I've never had a outstanding, chargeback, lien order, bankruptcy, etc. Apparently although i'm in the minority, I shouldn't expect special treatment.

They're all 0% if you pay them off every month, aren't they?

Proudly 100% debt-free. We do use credit cards, but pay it off each month. It's nice to see that annual statement come from them saying "finance charges paid in 20xx"=$0.00 I did mess up once a couple of years back, and ended up being a day or two late on the payment, and I had to call them up to get them to waive the finance and late fees :)

"I can only imagine how many computer systems the car has."

Given that my common everyday 2015 5-Liter F-150 crewcab has more digital IT than an Apollo moon craft (Saturn V included) I hazard a guess that the typical Merc (yes I am in the US) has enough computer power to make the International Space Station blush.

FYI to Lyn: My F-150 is an essential tool for me making money. Yes, it's all dressed out and used like an executive field office; my clients, my wife and myself like that, BUT it is a serious tow and haul truck too.

Dubious.

A little bit of hyperbole yes, BUT given the relative sizes and type of usages not so much.

I do like the idea of just 'a little bit of hyperbole'. Sounds like that phrase might hang out with 'a smidgen of vulgur excess', 'the slightest whisper of a cacophony', and 'the faint touch of a sledge hammer'.

The first thing this car does for you is make you buy another car so you have one to drive while the dealership spends several weeks figuring out why the doors won't unlock.
