The idea behind AstroSoM is to map raw astronomical data to sound, rather than chart or picture, so visually-impaired people can experience it. Truly the music of the spheres, so to speak.
I hadn't heard of the Hatnote application. Thanks for the info -- I'll give it a go this weekend. I'm looking forward to sharing both sites with some musical friends!
I've used a program called Spectrogram that does the inverse. It takes a sound file and turns it into a visual display. It basically takes an audio file, uses a fast fourier analysis to break it into frequencies and then displays with time on the horizontal axis and frequency on the vertical. One of the things they did with it was to create sound files that would draw pictures.
