Flying Very High in a Hot Air Ballon

12/14/2005 12:17 PM

This happened a few weeks ago, but was just brought to our attention.

On November 26, 2005, Dr. Vijaypat Singhania piloted a hot air balloon to 69,852 feet (21,291 meters) shattering the existing record of 64,997 feet (19,811 meters) held by Per Lindstrand. Dubbed "Mission Impossible 70k", the balloon ascended at between 600-700 feet per minute, taking 2 hours and 14 minutes to attain the record breaking height.

To put this in perspective:

Mt Everest elevation: 29,035 feet (8,850 meters)
High end of commercial airline flights: 40,000 feet (12,192 meters)

and for the record to be certified by the Federation Aeronautique International (FAI), the pilot must fly his machine on his own, land with the balloon and capsule attached intact and survive for at least 24 hours after landing.

A U2 Bomber can fly at 90,000 ft.

I never realized it could fly that high (17 miles up) till this article got me thinking about it. Much of the capabilities of military aircraft are classified, but I'm sure they've got a jet that can go higher then 100,000 ft (The U2 probably can). It's hard to believe we can fly at an altitude three times the height of Everest. To put it in obscure perpective, the highest point on Mars is Olympus Mons at 88,000 ft. A U2 bomber flies higher than that. Wow.

That is easy. If you want to se something amazing, go to:

http://www.firnspiegel.com/perlan/the_project.html

These guys are going for an altitude record of 100,000 feet MSL in a GLIDER! It is called the Perlan Project. The pilot will use a pressurized suit for the ride. To get to that altitude the team will use rising air caused by wind striking a mountain range. The result is what is called as a mountain wave or ridge lift. This updraft easily goes into the Earth's stratosphere.
