Three Seasons Room Roof Suggestions

05/31/2018 3:28 PM

I am looking for roof ideas for a three season room, I have specific wants that I would love to fulfill but realize not everything is possible. Money IS a factor and this will most likely be a diy project because of that and also what I want is likely custom.

First it is important to note that I am in the northeast and whatever roof I put up needs to withstand a snow load. It seems like the estimated snow load in my area is 40psf so keep that in mind.

Some of my wants are listed below

1. I would like a clear or mostly clear (see through) roof this is mostly for colder months to let light in.

2. A shade to cover the clear roof when it is needed

3. The ability to remove either the entire roof or sections in warmer weather and use the shade or replace the clear roof for when it rains.

I would love if all of the above was automated but I am fine with it being a manual process.

There will be equipment in this room that I would prefer to keep dry such as a hot tub but nothing that can't get a little wet.

As for the structure this roof will rest on, I am replacing the patio structure that was torn down before I purchased the house. I can adjust the structure design if need because of this. I am working with an architect (a retired relative) on the structure to ensure it will meet the load and weather requirements. I don't know what was there before only that I can see where it was secured to the house and code has it listed as an existing improvement to the house. The patio is an existing concrete pad in good shape (no cracks) that is 15 feet long by 19 feet wide. The concrete has obvious lines where the previous structure sat. At the moment I plan on having a 24 inch spacing in the rafters (these will not be removable) and I want as much light to get in, although that can be adjusted. There are obviously other structural elements but that is a lot to describe and not all that relevant to the roof material and design which is what I want ideas about.

My current thinking is extruded aluminum and some sort of polycarbonate panels that slide into place, something like 24 inch wide by 7 or so foot long panels. I could then use the same extrusions to hold a fabric cover. I haven't worked out the details for this or other options that may exist that I am unaware of which is the reason for posting.

If you're just looking for natural light I would go with solar tubes....I have three in my place, they are unexpectedly bright and light up the place...anyone unfamiliar with them thinks there is a light on...

I don't like the idea of a removable roof when snow loads are a concern. Ice dams and leaks come immediately to my mind. Now a sky light window one can open when desired maybe a way to go. You will probably also lose a lot of roof insulation on those snow less winter days with a removable roof.

Now if celestial observation is your goal then this book may be just what you are looking for.

Ice dams and leaks are a concern slightly, but as I said I don't mind a drip here and there in this roof as it is currently an outdoor space. I don't want it to pour inside but a drip or two isn't going to be a big deal. I am planning on a grid structure to support the clear part but that is a lot of detail to go into.

I also don't expect this room to be very usable in the middle of winter, temperature wise. I am hoping the clear roof will make it feel more like outside and the room usable during the late fall and early spring hence 3 seasons.

I would love to be able to use my telescope inside the room but that is not a design goal. I don't have enough room for a roll off roof. I was more thinking it would be great to see the night sky whilst sitting in the hot tub, and to remove the roof when the temperatures are high.

I'd look at what's out there and what others have already done.

(I only have one season here in AZ. and AC, patio misters and a pool work well enough)

Three Season Sunroom Addition Pictures & Ideas | Patio Enclosures

Three Season Room Roof | Houzz

If you have a budget, be very careful. Every great idea you see will double the cost of the project. So will custom one-offs.

Good luck, take pictures and blog it!

Well, this brings nothing to the table as a suggested solution to your request as posed. I do, however, offer a suggested different tack.

Hunter/gatherer can be a successful technique for all sorts of things. I scored a 9’ X 9’ roof window (skylight, commercial sort like you would find in a school or shopping mall) for $400 bucks. This was a (rather expensive) order error on the part of the glass house where I got it, and he was happy to get at least something for it.

When you hunt/gather, you do need to be pretty flexible. I was searching for something smaller... in line with a common residential size, but the ten cents on the dollar combined with being an industrial item could not be passed.

Perhaps visit the commercial glass guys in your area (hunting), see what they might have. If the list given in OP is a pretty solid ‘gotta have’ then H/G prolly won’t work out. Flexible? You just might score big.

[edit] Perhaps the commercial roof guys as well. Never know... it is called hunting!

You could make it like a lean-to greenhouse....

Then have the roof slide down the side like a garage door...

...just replace the panel inserts with tempered glass....

Oh wait, they already make them, ha....

I didn't see this before I replied! EXACTLY the kind of doors this lady had on the converted garage. Great solution.

I did an installation here in the wine country where a four car garage/barn was converted into a studio and one whole wall was roll-up garage doors with glass sections in the door panels. It was awesome! The doors rolled up for parties and summer time BBQs. There were three or four doors that could be moved independently. They all faced south.

This would be much better than a roof, especially if the roof is full of solatubes for more light.

I have something along those lines. not cheap to do. I use 31, 2 ft x 8 ft pieces of 1/2 think tempered glass to create removable walls and ceiling. The 13 ceiling pieces can be removed and replaced with 13, 1/2 thick sheets of plywood painted on the outside with sheets of foam insulation on the inside. all the sheets are held in by gravity and some small plastic springloaded 90 degree turn "wingnuts". To remove the ceiling piece I first retate all the clamps then lift each piece one inch toward the top, lift out the bottom, drop it down to free up the top and then rotate on the long axis 90 degrees and bring them down. I can do the entire roof in 1/2 hour but it is a workout. I get some drips in heavy rain. Not much snow to worry about here. 30 degree slope on the roof. Walls go under the house roof overhang. I have a 6 foot wide double door to the back yard that is permanent. If I was to do it over again the glass walls would start 4 ft off the ground from above a permanent rail and wall for better privacy. this would have saved me half of 18 sheets. I have permanently mounted odd sheets above the wall and below the ceiling on the sides. It is a pain to clean them on the outside. Since the glass is on the outside of the 2 x 4 framing there is no place to lean the ladder. I have corrugated fiberglass sheets keeping rain off off the top edge of the ceiling glass. Still hot tubbing year round!

Look at discarded sliding glass door panels as an example and source.

Insert imagination here

You forget to mention that removal of the tempered glass panels from the defunct frames provides many useful panels .. often free and of similar dimensions that could be installed in a variety of ways ( vertical or shingle etc) with some or all removable.

Look at z dumps and Craigslist for starters.

You could use a motorized retractable awning in conjunction with the garage door. Light, shade, open air effect.

Based on your requirements, your idea of using extruded aluminum framing with multiwall polycarbonate panels is actually one of the most practical DIY-friendly solutions for a three-season room in the Northeast.

For a 40 psf snow load, twin-wall or triple-wall polycarbonate panels (16–25 mm thick) are commonly rated for heavy snow when properly supported. With 24-inch rafter spacing, this setup can provide strength while still allowing a lot of natural light during colder months. Polycarbonate is also impact-resistant, lightweight, and easier to remove seasonally compared to glass.

To meet your goals:

Clear roof: Use clear or bronze polycarbonate panels for winter light.

Shade option: Install a manual or track-mounted fabric shade beneath the panels, or use removable exterior shade sails for summer.

Seasonal removal: Panels can be set into aluminum glazing tracks or pressure caps, allowing you to remove full sections in warmer months and replace them with shade or leave them open.

Water protection: Slight roof pitch and proper channeling will keep rain and melting snow away from equipment like the hot tub.

Automation is possible but costly; manual systems keep the project more budget-friendly and realistic for DIY.

While your project is structural rather than interior, the same planning principles used by professionals offering Las Vegas Kitchen Floor Remodel Service durability, moisture resistance, and long-term performance apply here. Careful material selection and expert layout planning will help ensure your roof system performs safely in all seasons.

Working with your architect relative to verify load paths, fasteners, and local code compliance is the right move and will make this custom solution both functional and achievable.

My question to you is do you get hail storms where you live?

We get a ridiculous number of hail storms in SE Queensland and finally I have given up replacing Alsynite clear roofing and just put Zincalum roofing on. Every few years we get hail of up to ball size which turns it into confetti.

This is just a word of caution for you.
