Strut Tower Repaint

07/17/2018 11:41 AM

Continuing the rust mitigation process on My 2008 Mustang GT...The strut tops were cleaned using an abrasive wheel, SS wire mini-brush and coated with a rust remover...

I neutralized the rust remover, which is actually just acid, with some baking soda and water solution, and dried it off....

Then I coated it with por15 top coat, 2 coats, and then primer, 2 coats, and then factory matching red paint, 2 coats...Will allow this to dry for 30 days, and add another 2 coats....

Are the strut towers such a particularly effective rust engine that all that is necessary?

On the other hand, a painful enough process that extra care is probably warranted.

It's a Ford... Enough said.

I am currently and have driven Fords my whole life. I live in the rust belt. I have seen shock/strut towers rust to the point of catastrophic failure.

I think the prevention he is doing now could save him a lot of headache later down the road.

JMHO.

Probably not, but these are the main mounting points of the body to the suspension for the front of the car....and I'd like to test this procedure to see how it holds up...There are some items I'm just replacing and some I'm restoring....I just replaced the rack and pinion steering and inner and outer tie rods....and had the wheels powder coated....

I like the fact that you are doing this work yourself.

It's the only way to be sure what, actually, was done.

You've done the easy bit , but are you sure there is no rust on the underside of the mountings?

I'm not sure of anything....but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it....I'm a ways away from having to dig that deep to find problems to fix....haha

Good question. I was thinking that myself.

While SE may not have to deal with slush and road salt, the salt air is pretty rough on cars.

Yes, when there is rust on a car it's usually coming through from the other side.

But having said that, I've no idea what the underside of my strut mountings is like either! Next time I have the wheels off I'll take a look.

That's not the case here, the salt is not coming from being splashed up, it's from the ocean spray from above and horizontal....There's a big difference from being even a block away from the surf, to being just 100'...as I found out....This was just surface rust that took place over a few years, prior to that the car was garaged and pristine...
