3 Phase Surge Protection between an AC Motor and Inverter

09/20/2007 9:42 AM

I'm having some require to installed 3 phase surge protection in between AC motor which drive by inverter ? Is that the good solution to protect motor and VFD from lightning ? Is the surge protector workable in these conection or it will trip during the switching of VFD ? I'm really doubt , could someone give me hint and the solution , thanks

It's usually better to close-couple the VFD and the motor, provide good local screening, and protect the supply inputs.

Make your system protected by putting lightening arresters at highest point of your system premises and connect all of your equipments with common earth. Use shielded power cable for connecting VFD with motor. Motor body should be separately earthed. In all conditions your motor will run safely.

Use reactor b/w VFD and motor.

What you really need is an arrestor vs. suppressor. BIG difference. Typical suppressor carries UL1449 rating and is not able to handle lightning. We use Clean Volt product that carries IEEE rating C62.11 ... gapped silicon carbide varistor vs. metal oxide type. It reacts quickly @ 1 nanosecond and shields imcoming voltage @ 10% above rated 3 phase voltage. www.mimcv.com.hope that helps Thanks

You should have some sort of overvoltage protection in front of the inverter- It has sensitive electronics that need protection.

IS your motor in close proximity to the inverter?

If you are concerned with an overvoltage occurring between the inverter and the motor, provide another tier of overvoltage protection at the motor.

There are 4 types of damages due to lightening

1 . Damage to structure

2 . Damage to services to structure

3 Damage near structure

4 Damage to services near structure.

In your case it is damage to service to structure.

So both SPD and LPD are eseenttial. If it is only structure then only LPD is necessary
