Hybrid electric Do it Yourself van of India

09/25/2007 7:04 AM

Last week i ve tried to make hybrid series electric van of mine with using two 9 kW 72 volts PMDC motors and then used one of it to coupled directly to diffrential to drive rear wheels while second motor is coupled directly to 10 HP petrol engine 280 cc single cylinder and batteries with curtist controller to control vehicle speed now when batteries were discharged at that time I am starting engine to generate power to charge batteries but batteries consumes just 30 Amps remaining is souped by motor asits generates 120 Amps at 72 volts hence its not appropriate for stationary chargings as during halt batteries were just taking 30 Amps remaining power is not used so what shall I do for it electricall or electronically whithout andy risk and complications

Start the gas engine to charge the batteries and power the car before the batteries are dead. You will be powering the car mainly by power generated by the gas engine and useing the batteries to supply the high current for climbing hills and fast acceleration. Use a governor like is used on a gas powered portable welder to control the throttle on the gas engine to idle it when there is no need to be generating full power (batteries charged and stopped). Most hybrids on the road today use a small gas engine to power a generater, and an electric motor to power the car, and the batteries to augment that power when it just isn't enough. Then when the drive isn't useing all of the power, the excess current goes back to charge the batteries.

LOL,

Toyota spent nearly $30 million over 10 years to develop their hybrid drive system, you are posting in a free web forum hoping to accomplish same. Lots of luck.

If Henry Ford were to have listened to comments like yours we all would still be driving Horse and Buggies. Which is probably environmentally safe.

I'm afraid not. Horse flatulence would contribute to greenhouse gases and the wood used to make buggy wheels would contribute to deforestation.

Dear Friend

Best selling SUV in India, "Scorpio" from Mahindra & Mahindra, has been produced at an investment which is almost a tenth of the cost which Ford estimated. Can you comment on that.

Don't be discouraged by detractors. The theory is simple and anyone with good technical skills can implement something like this. Toyota spent the money because they have it and needed to produce a car with characteristics very similar to other cars out there.

I have an old Honda Goldwing. It has a device called a reserve lighting unit that manipulates the current through the headlight filament in the event of one of the filaments failing. I'm sure Honda spent a lot of time and money developing this safety device. Can the headlights work without it? Of course! Just because things can be complicated doesn't mean they have to be.

Toyotas , hondas are big companies they have to sell products . quality ,reliablity reputation are major concerns while developing a new product so they spend huge sums to achieve that ,its a compliment to compare your self with such reput.

still its great to learn somebody is trying to emulate certain technology at indijual level , i think there is something related to electricals & electronics ,if your vehical is purely running on battery power engine to charge batteries , there is some direct connection of battries & motor try coupling change over switch between these two that is electronically controlled , measure ampereage at varying rpm , what type of battries you are using is also considereable ,if battries are trikle charged that should be recorded drive motor or controller is consuming more power than generated , according to your comment one motor is driving , other is a generator with same rating , this can be a problem try bigger generator , battery power should only be utilised during climbing and start stop condition , design regenerative braking as well to gain certain charge , with little expereince and fine tunning you can have your hybrid running around , big companies have there own coustomised batteries , motors, transmissions, and IC engines etc etc, and probabily resources , money dedicated human power , so they will fare far better, still best of luck

The switch you are describing, sounds alot like something used for a back up generator. sticking to simple electric drive will reduce the level of complexity. How much performance do you need? if you can live with modest power out put, you can basically have a golf cart with a on board battery charger, for longer trips. We're not talking the space shuttle.

Request to all:

1. Please select correct topic for your posts. Real intrested may miss your posts.

For example the Category for this post "Communications & Electronics" seems to be more relevant.

2. A hyper-link is not copied by some browsers. proper URL is more likely to be copied by all browsers.

Use you petrol engine to drive a generator which feeds power to the electric drive use batteries to assist and for backup.

Dear Friend

Interesting to know your hard work. Please let me know the capacity of battery.

Current drawn by the battery WILL DEPEND ON THE BATTERY STATE OF CHARGE, apart from the source capacity.

With controller in circuit, very obviously reqd. for such an application, it is possible that the controller is limiting the current into the battery to prevent excess current from damaging the battery, even though your motor is rated for higher current. Alternatively if battery is partly charged, then battery will not DRAW high current, which is good. I donot see how 120-30 = 90A is souped by motor, even during standstill. It appears that the generator, ( to which motor is connected, & not the motor as you have mentioned, since motor DOES NOT generate electrical power, it CONSUMES ELECTRICAL ENERGY & converts into MECHANICAL energy, Generator DOES JUST THE REVERSE ) is generating current sufficient to feed the connected load ( which in this case is battery charging only, during standstill ) If this is the situation then there isnt any problem.

Please also let me know the fuel consumption during this situation & check the motor generator rating, may be it is higher for the kind of load that it is designed to drive.

Thanks
