On earlier versions of Exchange the settings were managed from the Registry. If perhaps you are not familiar with Registry adjustments I would advise leaving it alone.

Also there are some parameters of location that are aparent at the installation of Exchange. You could re-install the server to get your data store into a new location. I believe that upgrading one version to the next had some features also

Good Luck

You will need to look those up. I have moved on from that trade to doing other things.

Besides you may think of it as a good learning exercise. You would be surprised how much effort I put into actually learning how the server worked. I even helped in the MS knowledgebase once because I had more info than the MS support team. That one took three days to solve. I got it before they did, made me feel good two.

When you actually work hard to get an answer you also get that rewarding self accomplishment fuzzy feeling. Go for it.

I do not know what you try to do here but you can use Exchange system management to move the EDB and STM to any where on the same server you want.

During the move all the mailbox will get disconnected.

Here is the instruction:

Move a Store
Exchange databases (mailbox stores and public folder stores) can be moved to other directories. The stores are automatically dismounted during the move. Use System Manager on the server on which the stores reside to move the .edb and .stm database files of the stores. You must perform a full backup when the move is finished.

Start System Manager: On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
Cannot Start the Application
You can manually start the application by following these instructions: On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
Open the Servers container in the console tree.
System Manager

Administrative Group or Organization
Servers
Click the server on which the storage group containing the stores you want to move resides.
Open the storage group container, right-click the store, and then click Properties.
Click the Database tab.
Under Exchange database, click Browse. In Save in, select the storage group to which you want to move the database (.edb) files. Click Open, and then click Save.
Under Exchange streaming database, click Browse. In Save in, click the storage group to which you want to move the streaming database (.stm) files. Click Open, and then click Save.
Click Apply. The following message appears:
You are about to perform the following
operation(s):

- change Exchange database location
- change Exchange streaming database location

To perform the requested operation(s), the
store must be temporarily dismounted which
will make it inaccessible to any user.

Do you want to continue?

Click Yes to move the database files. When the operation is complete, the following confirmation message appears: The database files have been successfully moved.

The exchange is a place to store information but I case if it got corrupted then, there is an urgent need to restore data. This can be done with SysInspire EDB to PST converter software which has the ability to restore data. It can restore all file of exchange in many different file formats which includes PST, HTML, EML, MSG etc It can preserve the data integrity of the entire database easily. It supports all versions of Exchange server and Outlook.

Exchange Servers acts as a central repository, which receives messages from client applications and creates or map a path to send that message to the designated receiver.
