Methane CR4 production and later use of sludge

09/26/2007 1:33 AM

As a additional thought in my discussion of Biogas production earlier this week, I would like to solicit production plant thoughts on the later use of the digester sludge and its handling . Our production is thought to be basically a 4 stage one comprising :

1.) Chicken Manure with its wood shavings, is feed with a measured amount of raw cracked corn feed, into the digester and worked off.

2.) The resulting sludge is then exited to a drying area.

3.) The dried sludge is then, feed into a Woodgas combustion furnace providing us with a combined heat and power system .

4.) The exited ash is then a natural potassium and pot ash fertilizer that can be sold in bulk loads back to a consumer or farm with possible additions of nitrogens for a more complete fertilizer matrix.

Questions:

1. ) How would you overcome the slowing of the 1st stage digestion because of the cellulostic addition to your sludge IE: ( wood shavings in the manure ) ?

2.) How would you at production stage # 2 ensure that large scale outdoor drying could take place without the stink associated with a digester's effluent. Would a covered composting concrete trough mechanically and continuously turned be appropriate to handle this issue and dry it for later burning or sale as top soil ? How would any environmental health issues of the effluent be addressed, as it would be exposed, + perhaps effecting the local air quality ?

Stage 3 of production: Products could be conveyed or trucked with a loaders assistance without many problems.

3.) At stage 4 of production, how would you store and then blend the resulting ash/fertilizer inexpensively ?

Ideas Please ? And what did we forget , theres always a surprise ?

Thank You

I'm not sure why you want to add cracked corn. The sludge is a great fertilizer as is.

When your making Methane with chicken litter the addition of a small amount of cracked feed causes a faster start of CH4 production .
