Rotary Cable Connection

12/28/2005 4:15 PM

I have an idea that has generated some questions I am trying to locate some answers for in my quest to issue a U.S. patent.

Basically I am looking for pictures or diagrams, or information referring to some sort of device that will allow a few wires to pass through an instrument that may be mounted on the exterior of an automobile wheel. The device would have to allow the wheel to spin, thereby allowing the wires or electrical pathway to remain in tact. (when the wheel spins, the wires will have to still work in order for the instrument to still pass the electrical current.

A) I know some sort of instrument such as this exists as a sort of odometer or tachometer on the exterior of a semi truck wheel. the instrument measures the distance the wheel has traveled and is mounted on the exterior of the wheel...

B) I need to know how I can have an electrical device mounted to the rear outside of an automobile tire or wheel in the center of the rim or wheel???

Can you either help me, or point me in the right direction?

Currently in use today is a design that uses electrical induction. My "Sonicare toothbrush" make use of this design, electrical induction passes from the base, through a gap of air and into the toothbrush handle that houses the battery. For your application, you could mount a ring behind the vehicle rim (ring will rotate with the rim). A stationary inducer could be mounted near the ring, to provide current. If you are planning on running lights, beware that some states do not permit "extra lights" as in Iowa the use of neon lights is illegal, my son can vouch for that as he has recieved tickets, the officers comment is that only emergency vehicles can have extra lights. Also you may have want to check out www.uspto.gov and www.patentcafe.com they may be able to provide you with insight into the patent process and searches, I have two patents pending, the process is an education. Good luck

RIMEX already have a device to transmit data (pressure, temperature etc.) from the rim of earth moving machines to onboard computer.

You need a slip ring or a wireless connection. Cheers, Lightdancing

Slip rings

12/29/2005 8:01 AM

The use of slip rings has been around for more then 25 years. I was employed at production site that required the use of large mixing drive motors in the most unusual designs. The engineering was introduced to the use of slip ring technology years ago. This helped in creating a safe power transfer to equipment on the proccess line. have fun and good luck.

Power to rotating wheel

See http://motion-controls.globalspec.com/SpecSearch/S uppliers/Motion_Controls/Slip_Rings?SrchItem=1 for a list of slip ring manufacturers. By the way: the external odometers on semi-trailers are typically mechanical, and consist of a pendulum inside a rotating [with the wheel] housing: they don't need electricity.

drilling for engineers

Why not drill a small hole through the spindle? Assuming this is a non-drive wheel, it won't have a rotating spindle and in which case, wires could be fed through said hole and require no complex connection.

Depending on what you are trying to do, you could employ a flying magnet trigger and pick-up, not sure what you are trying to do.
