Self Supporting Aluminium Dome Design for Storage Tank

10/06/2018 1:20 AM

Hello,

I have been given a project of designing a Self Supporting Aluminium Dome over an existing Steel tank with API 650 Appendix G.

Can you suggest me some software or the basic design methodology with some references to design the same??

Please share a design calculation for my reference if possible.

Um, if you are asking for even the basics to be provided then I would suggest that you do not attempt such a potentially dangerous project without assistance from someone more qualified who has access and knowledge of the relevant standards the structure must comply with. (I have visions it is a large chemical storage tank application, but could be wrong).

Are you working at a consultancy? Is there someone there that can help you.

Is this a school project? What is the size of the existing tank?

Thanks for your concern. Actually the thing is, in a week or so, i will have to review the design calculation and drawings of an aluminium dome over an MS storage tank in a refinery. The Dome is already getting designed by a third party. My Job is to review their design. However, before reaching to that phase, i would like to know the basics and the path forward to design such kind of structure. For that i was thinking of designing a small dome myself so that i can at least be aware of the basic design methodology. I am also a structural engineer and have designed quite a number of pipe racks, technological structures, compressor sheds, foundations. So, trust me i am pretty much aware of the risk involved in design of any structure. That's why i don't want to put my approval stamp on any design without its proper review. Can you help with my query??

I cannot in this particular application, but with the additional information you have provided one of our structural Engineers may offer some advice.
