Thermal Comfort for Hospital Facilities

10/07/2018 10:48 PM

Hi fellow Specialists/Experts,

Believe you may have encountered query related to thermal comfort topics for various types of building structures, particularly at tropical climate locations.

Understand some use Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for simulation and prediction to design shading requirements, to reduce temperature for comfort. Appreciate if you can share some understanding on what and how to acquire or record relevant parametric measurements in an natural ventilated room.

Thank you for your sharing and recommendation.

So you are looking for some software simulation of shading a building to mitigate the heat? Just make a high roof and paint it white add insulation and radiant reflective surface material underneath...Trees may look nice and add ambiance to the atmosphere, but in a high wind storm they become dangerous and destructive...Water elements add relief and instant cooling effect for inhabitants...

I'm assuming by"natural ventilation" that there is no conditioned air....Is that correct? What is the building structure composed of? Is this a tent, an open air structure, or an enclosed building? Are you just looking for air change requirements? Can you make a sketch of the building for us? Is this a temporary or permanent structure?

Something like this would maybe suite your needs?

Hi,

Thank you for good sharing on passive mitigation measures, ie heat shield coating and so on.

It is regarding Thermal Comfort for residents in an enclosed permanent structure, ie nursing home or hospital ward, with only ceiling fans and operable windows and louvered.

I'm assuming by"natural ventilation" that there is no conditioned air....Is that correct?

Yes, Correct.

What is the building structure composed of? Is this a tent, an open air structure, or an enclosed building?

Permanently enclosed building structure, ie 6 bedded hospital ward

Are you just looking for air change requirements?

Any solution to reduce thermal heat to increase users (ie patients, doctors, nurses, visitors) comfort.

Can you make a sketch of the building for us? Is this a temporary or permanent structure

Permanent healthcare facilities.

Much appreciate for further sharing.

Thank you

Then painting the roof white with proper roofing paint is your first step, next a radiant barrier attached to the roofing joists with a layer of thick insulation....What is your roofing material? Metal? shingles? asphalt? tile? gravel? What is the height of your attic space? Is the attic space enclosed? What is the building material? wood frame? concrete block?

Hi,

Thank you. It is a 12 storey RC building. The patient wards are located at 6th to 10 storey.

TQ

This could be a problem if the airspace is interconnected among the floors...like with open stairwells...this sets up a thermal layering effect that all the heat generated on the lower floors rises to the upper floors...in such a building you need to figure out how to ventilate that heat out and stop the cumulative effect on the upper floors...Using the chimney effect in that heat rises, the most efficient way may be to place a large exhaust fan on top of the stairway column, this would draw fresh air from each floor and exhaust out the roof...but the building design will determine what strategy will work the best...

...or it's possible you could put one on each floor exhausting out the side wall,, and the roof as well maybe....The airflow should be around 400 cfm per 500 sqft as a minimum, and be adjustable in some way...The goal is to get cross-flow ventilation, the placement of exhaust must be opposite the air intake supply, in other words, as far apart as possible...
