Filament winding with towpreg (epoxy prepreged carbon fibres)

10/03/2007 4:04 AM

I have started to do filament winding with towpreg (epoxy prepreged carbon fibres). Towpreg is a sticky material. I find very litle info about this in general and nothing on the internet.

Any good solutions how to get the fibres from the spools to the winding head, and how to form out a god winding head (delivery head) to plase the fibres on to the mandrel? Ore any link to an internet page?

More info would be nice. Presently filament winding 4mt long & 1.550mt dia foam fractionators, using up to 35 filaments at once, having just spent about 6weeks building winding machine from scratch. Can you mount the spool directly to the winding head?, can you email photo of your set up ? Regards Wayne

Mounting the spools on to the winding head is not a god solution because of the weight, 35 x 4,5kg = 157,5 kg extra wight.

Mount the creel inline with the movement of the cross carriage so the fibers have to do a 90 deg. turn around some rollers in to the winding head. Go to www.mikrosam.com.mk open "Filament winding" loock at the info of the mashine MAW 20 MA and loock at the photos at the botom of the page.

Glasfilled teflon is a nice material to use for rollers, ore teflon coated aluminum.

Some are using a heated eye (50-60 deg C) or rolers at the delivery point. Others lik me, are using glass filled teflon rollers all the way.

Dear friends,

I need your help in filament winding process. I was performing a R&D work with carbon fiber/ epoxy filament winding of underground storage tanks. Having attempted several times, after the first layer of 100+ passes, the fiber starts to slip due to unknown reason. I want to avoid the slippage. How can I do that? I have tried researching on the internet with many scienctific papers but solution is nowhere to be found, it could be I am looking in the wrong place.

I would like to request experience people to advise me. Thank you.
