Polymer Degradation

01/06/2006 8:27 AM

Hi All, I'm trying to find a liquid solvent capable of degrading stacked sheets of a polymer substrate in an enclosed environment. The solvent must be non-carcinogenic and must not react with stainless steel or polycarbonate. Any suggestions would be appreciated

What is the nature of the substrates that you want to remove.

Material is a bi-axially oriented polypropelene with a thickness of 0.1mm approx. Toluene at boiling point (and brake fluid at a certain temperature) will destroy it, but I am attempting to develop a method that results in destruction of the polymer using low-hazard/temperature substances. Ideally, the substance should be sprayable

Have you tried delaminine (sp?) or citrus cleaner full strength. At room temperature over the period of a day, it can cause some polypropylenes to "swell and gel" Rick

I'll look into that, many thanks. Ideally, what I'm looking for is an almost instant degradaton of the polymer. Appreciate your input
