Papermill Warehouse Modernisation

10/05/2007 5:20 PM

Hi

I am planning the software to upgrade the warehouse data capture in a papermill and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this. The major issues facing us are: Environmental - The warehouse is cold, but gets hot and humid at times. The bales of fibre cannot be easily individually barcoded - and are prone to water damage. The people operating the warehouse cannot be trusted to do anything complicated, its got to be as simple as possible.

I am considering a Forktruck mounted inductrial PC like: http://www.logisticsit.com/absolutenm/templates/article-datacapture.aspx?articleid=3311&zoneid=6

Any ideas about how best to keep the barcodes in the warehouse? Or would it be best to have a list of products for the people to choose from.

Any ideas welcome

Regards

John

Dear John,

I am presently working at Weyerhaeuser here in Oxnard, California USA and we have adapted to using PC attached to the truck , that is able to read barcodes at the same time be able to determine the individual weight of the roll, using a load cell. In our mill as soon as the rolls get off the winder it is weighed and the weight is printed and bar code is generated with other pertinent informations. So I hope this will help you a little with regards to your problem.... Good luck and have a nice day out there Israel

Honored sir,

Simplest way for You is to ask another Papermill how they are doing it!

Short of this (and I wonder if it is raw celulosis bales as product that You are talking about) since any product is packed (in case of outgoing products) then barcode could be in sealed plastic envelope tied by plastic rope or glued on product packing, and if I am not wrong, bales of fiber are tied croswise by plastic bands?

But, it has been long time since I last visited Papermill in full operation.....

As for computer, even in age of 80386 procesors there was industriall versions of PCs with rubber keyboard (as waterproof) and pasive cooling boxes ( so ventilators would not suck in dust nor anything else ) but You would need also waterproof shielding as there is plenty of water everywhere in the Papermill, no?

While we are at theme of Papermills, I have contract to find buyer for 2 used but in very good condition, machines for making cigarettpaper from ALLIMAND, that could bring to owner at least 20 Milion USD per Year in pure profit... I am offering anyone who would bring me such buyer, one milion USD from my commision! If You are interested, I shall supply details :-)) For existing Papermill, total cost would be cca 40 milion USD, with building for housing machines and everything necesary to start production included. Owner give as bonus one twocolor paper printing machine from MARKLIN, brand new (used only 6 months) and paid over 2 milion Euro.......

To start with I would set up a warehouse wide wireless network, using RFIDs on the rolls, outfit the forklifts with the computer and a proximity reader. Programs are available that are simple to operate and relay the info into the data base in the office without much trouble. See "Click Commerce WMX"

Thank you all very much for your comments. It is in fact the fibre warehouse that we are interested in doing at this point. The bales are usually bound in steel wire or plastic straps. It would be a good idea to attach plastic coated rfid tags to each bale and fit a proxy reader as suggested. Can these be reused?

Our mill already has an extensive wireless lan (Through the machine house and the finished goods warehouse), that can be easily extended into the warehouse.
