Pirate Drones

03/08/2019 8:42 AM

Since I know absolutely nothing about drones, I thought I would pose a question to the group. With the recent "porch pirate" increase, I started to consider the drone delivery concept. What would stop a small group with bad intentions of using a swarm of drones and forcing a delivery drone to the ground to steal the package? If the delivery drone incorporates an anti-collision device ( I can only guess!) would it be possible to force it down, then quickly grab the package and take off before law enforcement could get there? Also, are the drones going to have a restricted or desired air space? Would that make it easier to force them down? Will the big box companies need to have escort drones to intercept an action as described? One of those early morning ponderings of which I know nothing about, but how else are we to learn without asking? Thanks for any replies, and again, this is just hypothetical and to open thoughts and discussion. Who knows, maybe someone can make a million $ on an answer....

Cheers!

...or, maybe states should instate "Drone Hunting Season" licenses for marksmen/women?

Pretty sure there have already been cases of this reported.

In Texas they are considered a nuisance species and like all varmints can be hunted 24-7-365.

No matter how you slice it there's potential for Hollywood to make a million the next drone infused Blockbuster.

I'm thinking about a combination of thoughts where it's a group of grumpy well-meaning no-goodniks using pirate drones to take down commercial delivery drones even if they have to self sacrifice.

Easy enough. I would say tape a few short lengths of fishing line underneath your drone and flyover the drone you would like to disable.

Done correctly the tape should pull off of the pirate drone.

.... Back to the o p. I think taking down a drone with a drone would be easy enough but getting a drone to remove a package even in the most unsecured way would be a tough robotics challenge.

It's more likely the entire drone would be hijacked by humans on the ground or flown away by a larger pirate drone

... And that's all I have to say.

Good thoughts!! I was thinking once the drone was grounded, a real drone pilot/pirate would grab the package and their drones and skedaddle. I would like to believe that the delivery drone owner would have a tracking device, and though I know there are some dumb criminal types out there, I want to believe that anyone would not want to be tracked given their nefarious profession.

Re: Pirate Drones

The drones are likely to be much more expensive than the package being delivered for one thing...they are also equipped with tracking devices and cameras, fly fast and direct routes...The expensive nature of the equipment would elevate the crime to felony status, this alone with the odds of getting caught not in your favor, would likely be deterrent enough...

Porch pirates are opportunistic thieves that act on impulse...the punishment if caught is usually for the most part not too serious....planning and investment to commit a crime shows a commitment to criminal activity that the judge recognizes and takes more seriously...this leads to long jail sentences...not worth the price

True as that may be .

It won't be a big part in the Hollywood version.

I don't know about drone pirates, but here in Texas porch pirates tend to be professional thieves who regularly scout their hunting grounds and prey on unsuspecting targets. Nothing impulsive about that.

What about hacking the drones and rerouting them to make obedient delivery at anonymous but evil truckloading of stolen goods? What then, catch and release for drones? Your fleet of drones is being held hostage pending your payment of $$$$? Or off to the drone chop shop to be anonymized?

Of course that is not the same movie as 'raptor drone swipes package' (which we all want to see) ...

It almost stands to reason, in a world of drones, the next step will be fighter bots for heists, then bigger ones for law enforcement, and so on to the point of absurdity. All filming footage of each other, of course. Ah but when it comes to "bad machines", the themes are tried and true.

Forget it.

What you propose could ONLY happen in the movies.

I won't have to worry about unauthorized drone flyovers.

I'll just invoke rule, " cuius est solum, eius est usque ad coelum et ad inferos ".

Re: Pirate Drones

It seems that taking a package being delivered from the deliverer (drone or traditional human) introduces multiple problems that could be avoided by the thiefs simply by waiting for the package to be delivered.

The advent of bandit drones will make anything unsecured a potential target. It isn't too far fetched to imagine a drone that could cut window screen and pilfer jewlery out off the jewlry box in the dressing room. Drones need not always fly, and a drone that learns to creep could be much harder to detect.

Anonymized drones or even just drones that go unfound bring the possibility of their use in framing innocent citizens perceived to have caused some slight. Anywhere possession of stolen goods is strict liability and does not require mens rea would seemingly make dumping a bunch of ill-gotten gains in someones back yard an expedient end to a political or social rival.

Re: Pirate Drones

Instead of waiting near a particular house or a small group of houses for a delivery, wouldn't a pirate drone want to lurk near the distribution warehouse where the flying package density is much higher? Then when intercepting a drone, a signal scrambling device would be used so that the target would not be able to send/receive any signals...GPS, communications to base, etc....It would be blind. That's when the pirate drone overtakes the target with a very strong "dogcatcher's net" hanging below it (strong so that target's blades don't cut through net). Dogcatcher's net can also act as a grounded Faraday cage to assist with no signals in or out. Then pirate drone needs to get away cleanly...probably easily done by flying in between buildings for a while before flying into a Faraday cage protected box van at some random location...Would need a fairly large/powerful and agile pirate drone, however...Design project!

You're just tacking on charges...unauthorized use of scrambling device, conspiracy, grand theft, possibly even racketeering....Who's going to risk 20 years hard time for stealing a drone, particularly when they obviously already have one....?

No gentlemen, we need a believable plot for the movie...sex and violence with mal intent, action adventure romance twists and turns....Now if you could sneak your own drones into the shipping facility, then there would be little chance of being caught...Drone Clones......or if the drones armed with shotguns could hold up an armored car...
