"Rubber Shock Absorber"

10/08/2007 1:28 PM

Does anyone know where I can find a rubber shock absorber which would be approximately one foot long and have approximately a 1" diameter with an eye on both ends. It is intended to be fastened in a line with wire rope under tension so that the object being supported on the wire rope is not subjected to severe shock or vibration.

What is the weight? For safety reasons I would not use a rubber rod with eye bolts. The only thing holding it together would be only as much as the rubber within the threads could hold. There are many shock dampening devices out on the market. Try Google If it's light weight use a spring. Better action and fastening abilities.

Thanks

The weight with safety factor would be about 2500 lbs.

The spring may be an excellent alternative. I have seen the rubber used with a logging chain holding a floating dock and it worked well however I could not find the source.

Try a polyester sling the material has some stretch to it will handle the load.

I'm sorry, but my experience with Harbor Freight leaves quality pretty far behind...

I certainly agree with the chain or cable in the middle for safety. 2500 lb is a LOT for anything of rubber under tension - compression would be another thing.

Which brings to mind a couple of U-shaped devices compressing a block of rubber - if the rubber should fail, the Us simply become a chain...

Check you local boating store. Sound like those used to take the strain off mooring lines for big (over 35') boats.

I agree with humpman. Boating stores have rubber shock absorbers that work very well with faily high loads. You do not tie the rope to each end, though. You pass the rope through the eye at one end, wrap it around the rubber and through the eye at the other end. As the rubber straightens, the rope gradually takes the load.

Good shock absorbance, no shock at the end of travel, no loss of strength from knots.
