I need a coupling

10/11/2007 8:53 PM

I'm looking for a small coupling where an inner cylinder or race turns an outer one, but the outer one will not turn the inner one. Sort of like a Bendix bike brake, but the inner shaft is 0.25" diameter.

need.

.......info.

Centrifugal clutch type arrangement? (need to be rather small though?)

What force are you transmitting?

What rpm?

Is it bi-directional?

Shoe size?

My reply didn't seem to take.

About 10 in-lb

<10 rpm

small (0.25 shaft)

<$100

bi-directional

Bi-directional?

Your earlier statement, "inner cylinder or race turns an outer one, but the outer one will not turn the inner one", contradicts: bi-directional...

No it doesnt...

Ineer race will turn outer one...IN EITHER DIRECTION... bi directional.

Outer won't turn inner.

unusual type of coupling you have to admit. It took me for a short ride too but then I realised what he meant at first. I have never seen one myself.

If you consider the uni-directional bearings the inner will turn the outer but in the opposite direction from what the outer would turn the inner. Now is that , by some stretch of the imagination, also maybe perhaps bi-directional or not. Can be confusing and leaving you clutching for straws, in any direction if need be.

Try asking bearing suppliers for a 'sprag clutch'.

You'll have a job doing this in both directions if this drive ever reverses.

The sprag only works in one direction, i.e., overunning. Thanks

Then you'll need something 'active' like a magnetic clutch I think.

Yeah, I know that's the logical answer. I was hoping for magic. Thanks.

What is the outer diameter? and how much width is there to play with?

Also useful would be to know what the "ring" thickness could be for either inner and outer.

Personally I have never seen or heard about a ring or clutch type that will transmit rotation in either direction but from the inner to the outer only. Mine always have been uni directional.

Is this a new design or something broke?

Sorry to be so vague. The person who wrote the spec thought there was such a thing and I was grasping at straws. Finally convinced him to let me use a spring-loaded multi-tooth coupling; takes an extra step to disengage but, hey, it's available.

Perhaps you can help as you are in England. A company called SAMAR TEchnology, 60 Newland Street, Coleford, Gloustershire, UK,GL16 8AL has such a device. Patent numbers UK 2343923 & US 09/434133. I wanted to use one myself for a machine I am building; but I have not yet got a quotation from them.

Came back with this http://bdmclient.co.uk/docs/SamarTec.pdf
