Safety on machinery UK

01/17/2006 8:35 AM

A local factory that my company occasionally deals with has removed all guards and safety devices from their machines including presses that are loaded by hand and robot welding cells.

The resident maintenance staff have argued with management about this policy to no avail. The union representatives are only concerned with their members wages as all production labour are unskilled foreign workers (mostly non-English speaking) on piece work.

A letter to the MD listing the maintenance staff's concerns was torn up in front of a staff member.

The resident maintenance staff have contacted the local Health & Safety Executive who will only inspect the plant following an accident. What else can be done?

Machine safety.

Thats crap! Is the shop union ? Do you have a saftey council? Find out who carries their liabillity insurance. This practice is illegal in most civilized places. It's not 1830 and working in a mine with a cannary.Good luck and don't give up. How many workers have to be injured or die in the name of the god forsaken dollar ?

Welcome to the real state of industry in parts of this 3rd world country - the UK! Trying to find out if they carry liability insurance. It was the unions and HSE response that shocked us.

In my experience, unions have lost their teeth when it comes to their ability to carry over workers' issues to management. I reckon you have to keep harping on at the HSE. Get their response in writing. If all else fails......try the press!!!

manufacture's policy if equipment is leased

01/18/2006 12:56 PM

Contacting the manufacturer of the equipment should raise concerns. Each safety measure is there for a reason and the manufacturer would have serious questions regarding practices of use with their equipment. That's is they are under lease or financed. For a large scale press that you seem to be refering to, a safety council (OSHA in the states) has to examine it and qualify it safe for use (sometimes only by fully instructed and qualified individuals). The manufacturer could be a good place to start and they usually have a lawyer (barister) of their own. Good luck and don't take no for an answer.
