Hello,

I could use some help on this too please. i am considering getting a used IRB 1400 with an S4 controller. I am an experienced software developer, and I am trying to find out more regarding programming these before I purchase one.

I've searched the net, but can't find the manuals so it is rather hard for me to assess the programming capabilities - I can't even find examples of the RAPID syntax. I want to have an external PC trigger cycles in the robot and coordinate the robot with another machine for machine tending.

Ideally, I would just like to stream in commands from the PC so I can fully write my own software layer and not have to depend on the S4 controller to host the robot programs.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Thanks. :)

I have hard copy manuals for the Rapid software, several hundred pages. In order to write your own application, this will be very time consuming and you won't get great support from ABB because you are buying a used robot and it is not current production model.

Regarding using simple Inputs and Outputs to communicate, this is easy provided you are referring to industrial 24v type signals.

I am not familiar with ABB's serial communication capabilities.

There are many people with the ability, but they don't want to do this type of work for free.

I am sure the IRB is capable of machine tending, provided the payload on the faceplate is within rated capabilies.

You would have been better off to choose a robot built on a WINDOWS system (KUKA) for this type of application. Many companies already have the application software to do this with no time investment on your part.

Well, KUKA is not windows based, only it's programming console (the newer types). The system it self is Vx Works based.

If you need some abb programming manuals or rapid samples write me on wolfino1@seznam.cz

There seems to be some interesting thinking going on here.. I work for ABB as a Field Service Engineer - So lets get some REAL information out there!

If you buy a older used robot, the S4 (M 94 ) controller is as far back that is currently supported by ABB - However, there are some smaller 3rd parties that can help with S2 and S3. The S4, S4C, and S4C+ products have parts, training classes and on site programming support and service are available, the same as the current controller the IRC-5.

ABB sells used robots from the M98 S4C vintage with a 1 year warranty after a total inspection/rebuild and test. The prices are higher than some on the internet, but you get what you pay for! I had a customer pay $7200 + shipping for a 6400 robot and controller that had a bad wrist... The wrist is around $10-15,000 for a replacement so, not such a good deal after all.

I would be happy to email manuals to anyone in PDF format, however, I need to know what version of RAPID is running on your controller. That being said, you MUST have a large enough mailbox to get the files.

The ABB S4 series controller runs RAPID, and the IRC -5 uses a windows interface, but still uses RAPID for the programming.

I would be happy to help with questions for programming as my free time allows - and to be truthful it is limited. Good Luck!
