Need Extra Strong, Water Based Glue

10/05/2019 6:58 PM

I need a extra durable glue that will hold plastic, wood and vinyl.

  • Super Glue
  • Gorilla Glue
  • ...something or other "77" glue

Doesn't cut it. I need stronger and it has to hold under water.

Any ideas on this?

I was looking for something recently for wet conditions outdoors. I haven't used it, but the Liquid Nails Fuze It was the best looking thing I could find on the internet - couldn't get it locally. Underwater test in this promotional video (but is it real?):

https://www.remodeling.hw.net/videos/liquid-nails-fuze-it-takes-on-wet-adhesion_c

The one my landscaping supplier recommends for outdoor/wet conditions is Loctite PL Premium - I don't know if it works underwater but the Loctite PL products did well in these tests:

There's a good discussion of PL use for boats here. Last comment maybe most informative - it can be useful but not as durable as epoxy in the boat context.

Depending on the size of what you are bonding, the "stickiest" adhesive that I've come across is "Fulloprene 330". It's a structural adhesive for bathrooms and comes in the standard caulking gun tubes.

Note that this is NOT a water based glue. I'm almost certain that if a glue has a water based chemistry, then it will eventually fail in significant water exposure.

It has some "stretch" capability, is a turps clean-up (if you get to it fast enough) and honestly I haven't found anything it will not stick to.

Note to moderators, I have named the product but haven't mentioned the manufacturer, but feel that it's important as there are other bathroom adhesives that do not have the same performance as this one.

You’ll have to give us more information than that. I searched “Fulloprene 330” and the only thing that came up was this discussion.

Sorry, my memory has faded a little. I just checked and it's "Fulaprene 303" not what I previously named.

Does the same adhesive have to be used on all three of these materials?

If you have a challenging bonding problem, your best results will be from contacting the people who will be selling you the materials. They are in a better position to recommend an adhesive for a particular application.

These folks may have some answers for you:

https://www.masterbond.com/applications/bonding

Or:

https://www.henkel.com/brands-and-businesses/adhesive-technologies

You might look into the Hysol products from Henkel-Krayden, like Hysol EA-9394.

Or:

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/All-3M-Products/Adhesives-Tapes/Industrial-Adhesives-and-Tapes/?N=5002385+8710676+8710815+8711017+3294857497&rt=r3

Some of the VHB tapes might work for you.

Or:

Epon 828 with Epi-Cure 3140.

https://www.hexion.com/en-US/product/epon-resin-828

https://www.hexion.com/en-US/product/epikure-curing-agent-3140

Table 3 in the Handbook of Adhesives has a matrix showing the suitable adhesives for bonding various substrates.

Good luck with your quest.

You don’t mean water based glue, correct?

Water soluble until cured...(?)

Epoxy in 2 parts, when nothing else works, or JBWeld

I suspect that your title is a mistake! Unless I'm badly mistaken, and as suggested by a couple of previous posts, any glue (adhesive) that is water based will not last long under water.

In my experience, the most durable water resistant adhesives are all two-part products that must be mixed at use (commonly known as epoxies). I've had good luck with several different ones.

Just this last week, I had a tooth filling that was done with a polymer that is hardened by the application of UV light. Obviously, that substance must be very water-resistant! Between advances in the polymer and advances in the UV light sources, these compounds have become much more useful. This filling was activated by just 30 seconds of UV light from a hand-held UV "flashlight" (definitely NOT just a $10 UV flashlight). It might be worth investigating...

My experience is the Henkel/Lokite folks are very helpful, or at least the guy that covers our area (NC/SC) is. You can probably take your application directly to them and get good advice.

Yes, My description was in error. It does NOT have to be water based.

I have contacted all of the distributors of the products mentioned and am awaiting replies.

Yes, I need the glue to adhere strongly to all three materials.

Thank you all as usual, for your input. I'll await what the manufacturers say.
