Frozen Lake Causing Boulder Retaining Wall Movement

10/11/2019 10:55 PM

Have purchased lake front property which has huge boulders in place as a retaining wall built in 1979. I see that sand and gravel have been used as a base. Some of the large boulders have fallen into lake leaving large open gaps between some of the boulders and the lake is eroding the property. The association has lowered the lake water this year to dredge so this would be my opportunity to try to fix wall. How do I stop ice from pushing boulders from their position? Do I pour gravel in crevasses to stop ice from forming? HELP?

..."During the winter months, retaining walls give slowly expanding ice sheets something solid and vertical to push against. This is BAD news for your wall. Your new retaining wall will lose the battle against ice jacking. You are much better off with a properly riprapped, sloped shoreline, which provides the opportunity for the expanding ice to slide gradually up the shoreline instead of pushing directly against the wall/shoreline."..

That will work as long as jetskiers obey the no wake rule. Guess how I know that

Certain inherent risks come with waterfront property ownership...

I wasn't prepared for unlawful activity. The neighbor put up a retaining wall, which exasperated the erosion, I had to put one up as did the neighbor on the other side.

One should never exasperate erosion. We also live on a lake and understand what you mean about jet skis. For some reason the jet skis didn't show up this past summer though -- a welcome respite.

An SDS-Max drill and a 36" x 1/2" inch bit would allow you to easily drill a hole in each boulder to thread them together.

So now all the boulders will fall into the lake?

That's the risk I'm willing to take.

Ice-related entropy-consequences can not help but push the rocks apart...
