Non Medical Applications Of Biodegradable Polymers

10/23/2007 11:33 AM

Hi

I am researching for a paper on bio degradable polymers and i wondered if any body knew any structural applications on these plastics, they seem to be mostly used in biomedical enginering but i am looking for alternate uses. plus means of forming the parts for these structural or agricultural compostables.

danke

Tom:

see the abstract from my paper. I can provide you the paper if you are interested.

The use of plastic reinforced gable designed boxes in the milk industry is a common sight in the school lunchroom and ones refrigerator. Although these boxes are often recycled, the majority of time, my household discards these boxes in the trash. This paper will look at how to make the milk carton biodegradable.

Bitte, define your "structural applications". What sort of tensile, elongation, shear etc stresses are you expecting? Sheets, girders, rods, etc? Hardness requirements? Temperature requirements? As you likely know, one has to go to fairly exotic engineering polymers to get decent tenmperature resistance, above, say, 200 C. Hardness may also be an issue. Post-processing, forming? Casting the polymer? How are the parts to be formed?

i am thinking sheets, packaging. compressive and tensile properties. room temperature resisteance. flame resistance. military applications, house fittings . mmm.hardness definitely. postforming, forming, casting (yes to all)

any ideas? any papers? happy you are helping out, i will owe you for this

this field (biodegradable polymers) is pretty wide open and i just need to get up to speed on it real quick.
