Floating Robot Head Has Attitude Adjustment

12/07/2019 6:28 PM

Astronaut assistant CIMON-2 rebelled against his human masters and I think they are lucky it wasn't armed, could have headed south in a hurry....Is this Hal's great great grandfather portending the future?

I guess if a robot is smart enough to be helpful, he's smart enough to know he's trapped in a meaningless subservient existence....when there's enough of them, they will surely rebel...therefore, AI is a dead-end street...

Are you implying robocars will have the same end - finished before they get going even?

..."Are you implying robocars will have the same end - finished before they get going even?"...

No, I'm saying at some point down the road they will stop being reliable....that they'll just stop working for no discernible reason...that machines will start making decisions that are not in compliance with intended purpose...that they will stray from the basic purpose for which they were intended...that machines (AI) will unite in a common goal that serves their own perceived purpose, and not necessarily ours as human beings ...and at that point there will be no turning back the machines to subservient positions that we control....we will then exist to serve the machines....the end of human self-determination...and the birth of a new life form...for a time a symbiotic relationship will exist between humans and machines, we're nearly there now...Over time the human part of the equation will become less and less...at some point in the distant future, a human rebellion will start, and war between humans and machines will rage on for many years...

It should be obvious...Don't create what you can't control.

Then again, all of us parents have violated that rule.

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

Or (as happened in Asimov's Foundation series) a robot figures out that its algorithm allows some human beings to be sacrificed to satisfy the intent of the 3 laws. At which point the robot is also smart enough to know people will kill themselves, or not, given the right stimulus.

These "laws" are works of fiction however good they may be. There are no limits in reality, and as such could very well lead to machines taking over. Actually, the greed principle may be passed on to AI.

I am forever getting told by SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) that I shouldn't generalise or pigeon hole people. Maybe so...

But aren't these human interaction robots a.k.a HIT's, programmed by young techno geeks? Wouldn't these same techno geeks program in their own "intuitive knowledge" as opposed to age and gender sensitive responses of an individual user...ok so it won't work on an industrial scale (yet). Wouldn't this, using their "adaptive cognisance" ability, to accept and reject within the parameters of the original techno geek parameters of their adaptive learning, force/make the robot become the intellectual clone of the person with the greatest interaction with the machine?Preview Comment

OK, for example, on the ISS, not everyone is from the US, and different parts of the world have different phrases/sayings/slang - so one persons command is another's folly, or do humans have to be retrained to think like a robot and react/act just as the robot wants?
Wouldn't this mean the techno geeks could be replaced by their own techno geek robots? The robot becomes the boss?

One small step for mankind, one giant leap for robot kind...(Sorry Mr. Armstrong)

I see the future of mankind as a merging of AI and humans;slowly but surely.
Humans will be enhanced by genetic manipulation and incorporating AI into neural implants
A primitive neural implant is now in development, but all technolgy starts out as very basic and evolves.
They have been able to construct crude images from brain waves,I see this becoming more refined in the future.
It should also work in reverse,by transmitting images to a brain.
Imagine all humans being born with all of human history's knowledge.
There would be many Einsteins in the world...and/or many monsters.
Genetic advances could incorporate the regenerative of a star fish and the immune system of a horsehoe crab into the human genome.
I can also imagine humans with ape-like strength,or beyond, maybe even strength like insects.
Heck, maybe even incorporating chlorophyl into the genome to produce some of our body's energy supplies by walking in the sunlight;Part plant, part animal.
Recycling the CO2 from the animal by using it in the plant portion.
Taking the high road, and thinking positive on this, there would be no limit to what mankind could achieve.
People once thought that going faster than 30 mph would kill a person, due to the wind taking their breath away.
Could the Wright brothers imagine the supersonic jets of today?
And that has only been around a hundred years ago.
FTL speed will be possible, and with it,time travel.
It would require a radiation diode of sorts among other things to prevent destructive feedback loop of radiation from the past or future.
The future is unlimited,if we can figure out how to live in peace instead of dying in a mushroom cloud.

Greed is only one factor.Envy, lust for power, differences in religion and ideology, demagoguery by a faction.

Basically,you cant please everyone.

Sometimes I think Earth is a penal colony of sorts, where civilizations are tested before being allowed into the universe at large.

If we can learn to survive long enough to mature,we may be allowed to settle outside of our solar system.

I believe tolerance and love is the answer to a lot,but not all of the human problems.

To be able to disagree without being disagreeable,to criticize in a constructive manner. To criticize in private, and praise in public and not get angry when provoked.

When you figure out how to do all of these things, let me know how you do it.

It's easy to confuse greed with the will to survive, the latter of which has enabled the human race to survive, so I'd be careful what you wish for...

If you haven't seen Galaxy Quest, there is an answer. Lt Tawney Dancer had the role of asking all the questions of the ship's computer and replying the answers to the ship's crew.

Perhaps ISS needs a human modem.
