Drawing files management: how to create a searchable database?

10/28/2007 9:43 AM

My company is working on several families of products. Assemblies vary from 10 to 100 parts, all drawings being Solid Edge files. Each assembly contains some specific parts and some general-use parts (like fasteners).

For the design engineers, the challenge is to put order in these files and to create a searchable database that avoids multiple copies of each drawing file. Search has to be based on filters like part ID or description. What would you suggest for achieving these targets?

Pro/E uses 'Intralink' as its database for storing parts/assemblies.

Try this:

There are some free and open source revision control softwares that will track and control the version arborescence of a project in a directory.

Designed for software design, they can track any kind of file.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I'm not looking for a revision manager (actually Solid Edge has a very good one) but for some kind of local mini-google able to find a file by key-words.

Thanks.

Google desktop?

Would the keyword taks be inside the file?

Google desktop will look inside common pc files, perhaps not solidedge.

Or google ''open source sql''

"Ask Sam" is a database search engine which will search for any word, or key words, in any defined database or in the world if you happen to have the world on your computer. The structure of the returns might have to be defined. Check it out.

Not sure if this will answer your needs, but you may want to try Filesphere at http://www.filesphere.com/

Good Luck
