Can any one tell me the average BTU's per gallon for vegetable oils?

I remember that the BTU content of most common fuel oils is roughly 140,000 BTU/gallon-US. This is in line with the 130,000 BTU/gal previously given.

it depends somewhat on the source--how much oxygen is already in the oil's chemical make-up. Also on the carbon to hydrogen ratio. 'Heavy' petroleum runs about 20,000 BTU/#. "Lighter petroleum products like gasoline run about 16,500 BTU/# due primarily to more hydrogen atoms in the mixture. Each carbon atom will take on 2 oxygen atoms, while a hydrogen atom will take on only one-half oxygen atom. The 'oxidation' is what releases the heat of combustion.
