Drilling Through the Earth's Crust

01/30/2006 5:32 PM

The 500 million dollar Japanese deep sea drill named CHIKYU, has been completed and is currently being tested. The drill is capable of reaching depths of over 7000 meters. To date, the furthest depth reached has been just over 2000 meters.
Cores can be analyzed at the floating laboratory, but the Japan agency has also established a core sample research institute in Kochi, southwestern Japan, for more in-depth examination.
The possible areas of advance form a long and varied list: climate change over the centuries, atmospheric composition, mantle core and plate dynamics, marine ecosystems and extremophiles, or animals that can exist under conditions of extreme temperature or pressure.

Drill

If They Drill all the way through the crust it could be a sweet real estate venture. I think they want to make a few more Hawaiian Islands. Where the deepest holes at now...African Diamond mines possibly?

Drilling Through the Earth's Crust

You stated that the deapest drills are at 2000 meters. I have oil wells in my back yard in Texas that are label "15000 Feet" which is over 4500 meters. I think the article is only considering holes bored into the sea floor.

Drilling a hole

02/02/2006 12:38 PM

I think u must specify the size of hole drilld by the machine to avoid misundrrstanding.Drilling a oil well is different and making a hole in the earth is entierly different. It will be a great thing , and can open many myths about the earth's interior.

The drilling into the earths core is a great unknown and we should be extraordinarily cautious as we do not know the effects ... We do not know what is at the core. Can we also set off earth quakes and other hazards? We are playing russian roulette!!!

I agree what are these mass empty spaces under the earths crust filling up with. What does it do for our core and what will result from its absantce? I don't know but I am worried. We know the power of oil so why are we not thinking about the results it may have.
