PLASTIC .???

I know that we can make plastic(ruber) from HCHO and fenol...But can I make a plastic material from others aldehydes like etanal...??? using an another fenol like resorcinol...???

I want to know can I make a plastic material, or some material simular to plastic with some other reaction from simply chemicals...????

Hi stefan

I am not a chemist or polymer engineer ,i am from different field , still i would like to know something about plastics , you must be knowing ABS ,PVC ,asbestos ,bakellite ,acryallic ,polyeutheren ,foam and all that having varying chemical properties , but most of them or all of them are not bio degradable , you can do research in them for this reason . they are already there but not very popular atleast in some parts of the world , i know you will find some solution from experts.

The plastic made from HCHO and fenol is called BAKELLITE...

Bakelite is a thermoset resin compared to many of the thermoplastic resins listed by the other respondent (eg: ABS, Polystyrene, Nylon(s), polyethyleneterthalate (mylar)). Thermoset resins are crosslinked polymers and so will generally not remelt under heat to allow remolding (they set chemically). Thermoplastics are usually long chain molecules that lose their mobility as the temperature falls below the meltpoint. This type of plastic can be molded and remolded several times by heating above a suitable temperature. I would suggest you look into a book on polymer science. Almost any such text will provide the names of chemicals (including chain initiators) and operating conditions to make the plastics.

If you are looking for these plastic materials on line or in a text, be aware that "fenol" is phenol. There is a whole family of formaldehyde condensation plastic resins. Phenols react with aldehydes in general, where there are available ring positions o- and p- to the hydroxyl group. Formaldehyde is a very reactive aldehyde, and reaction slows as one gets into the higher aldehyde homologs. Products range over a very wide range, depending on ratios of the reactants and catalysts. Essentially, the Rxs are always catalyzed., either with acids or bases. When phenol is reacted with xs formaldehyde, mono-, di- or tri-ring substitution products result. These are called methylol derivatives. Usually a basic catalyst is used for these Rxs. If an acidic catalyst is used and if the molar ratio of phenol is greater than the aldehyde, the methylol products condense with phenol to form dihydroxydiphenyl methane. Further condensation forms resins called Novolacs. Reactions continue with either xs phenol or formaldehyde, plus alkaline catalysis. There are likely many information sources for these reactions in sites such as Google, etc.
